We are the physical foundation of the teaching, research and learning that takes place at the University, and we are proud of the important role we play.

The Division is responsible for buildings with a replacement cost of NZ$2.5 billion, and more than 22,000 hectares of land.

With over 3,500 University Staff and 20,000 students, it is a bit like helping to run a small town.

The role

This role represents a great opportunity to work on a wide variety of projects from small refurbishments up to $1m new builds, covering everything from historic buildings to high-tech scientific laboratories.

You will work with Academics, Architects and Facilities Managers to develop concept designs and assess feasibility then take responsibility for delivering specific built projects and on-going maintenance.

Working within a close team and with a wide range of people across the University, you will help us to achieve the Property Services vision, which is to create a built environment that encourages and inspires aspirations of excellence for everyone who experiences the University of Otago.

Your expertise in contracts management will be fully utilised, working with both external contractors and internal staff across the full range of trades.

Main duties will include :

  • Ensuring construction contracts are completed on time, within budget and to client’s satisfaction.
  • Providing a comprehensive quantity surveying service to Property Services and the University.
  • Ensuring competitive prices are received from contractors, subcontractors and material suppliers.
  • Establishing costs of building and grounds alterations and additions for University budgets.

    Your skills and experience

  • Be suitably qualified.
  • Have extensive experience within the building and construction industry.
  • Self-motivated, energetic and organised.
  • Experience and understanding of the Building Act, local authority planning and regulations and other regulatory requirements relevant to the position, including Worksafe.
  • Previous experience managing large value and simultaneous contracts.
