Position Description Role Deputy New Zealand Editor Reports to New Zealand Editor Chief of Staff Salary range 3 days a week N 36 000 42 000 full time rate NZ 60 000 70 000 negotiable 3 for KiwiSaver Purpose of the Role The Conversation is looking for a Deputy New Zealand Editor to work with our current New Zealand Editor and the rest of The Conversation s Australia New Zealand team We re looking for a creative self starter and confident communicator who is able to work with researchers and universities across New Zealand The ideal candidate would have experience as an editor or journalist in areas such as politics business or the humanities as well as the ability to switch to editing health environmental and science stories to complement the experience of science journalist and current sole New Zealand Editor Veronika Meduna The Conversation s unique publishing model pairs professional editors with academics to better inform public discourse Deputy Editors work with academics and researchers to find out about the latest research and help translate their ideas into plain language so they can be shared with a wide audience That means spending time with our university partners and learning about what s happening including new research The primary responsibility of the Deputy New Zealand Editor will be to commission edit and publish text based articles as well as multimedia content with training and support from digital storytelling colleagues Being able to represent The Conversation in public and in meetings with academic leaders is also an important part of this role This job is being advertised as a three day a week position but there may be scope to increase those hours depending on future support we can win from non member universities The Conversation s New Zealand editing team is entirely funded by support from New Zealand universities It could also suit someone who wants to work more flexibly and spread their hours over more days a week ie working four or five shorter days a week Deputy Editors need to be voracious readers who are well informed about developments in their fields and passionate about developing new ideas The Conversation has become a trusted global journalism brand and the Deputy New Zealand Editor would need to protect its hard won credibility They must be thoughtful calm methodical rigorous and possess a deep commitment to professional impartiality and high ethical standards We are open to applicants from anywhere in New Zealand The Conversation is committed to building an inclusive workplace and we encourage applicants from diverse backgrounds Key Selection Criteria Experience as a journalist or editor across the humanities politics or business Curiosity and an appetite for knowledge Strong people skills and diplomacy The ability to build a strong network of contacts Highly developed research and analytical skills Creativity and the ability to generate compelling ideas Polished presentation Care and attention to detail Please send resume and one page cover letter to work theconversation edu au Closes Tuesday 17th September close of business 5pm Melbourne time
