  • This is an opportunity for you to get involved in a great initiative improving regulatory services in Building Consents.

    We have a primarily home-based role (preferably Lower-North Island), where you can use your extensive knowledge in the construction or design environment to improve the capability and competency of Building Control staff.

    Wellington City Council manages an initiative with Simpli, a members-organisation that works with approximately 28 Building Consent Authorities around the country.

    The initiative seeks to improve performance, consistency, and service delivery across building consents processes.

    Your role will be to monitor and evaluate staff performance and capability against evidence-based criteria. You will bring a number of skills together : building control expertise, evaluation, report writing, innovation, and business development.

    The role will suit someone who likes to work independently, is a self-starter, and can manage their own priorities. In this age of remote working, you will need to be comfortable with video conferencing.

    There are some core skills and experience that are a legislative requirement for the role :

  • At least 5 years' experience in the building control sector, having undertaken both building consent processing and inspection of building work
  • Experience working as a Team Leader, Manager or Senior Specialist, or Senior Consultant in the building control sector.
  • You will need to have a good understanding of the Building Act, the NZ Building Code, and associated standards, including acceptable solutions.

    The largest component of your role will be home-based, however there will be some travel around the country, and about a quarter of your time will be spent visiting participating Councils to perform desktop and construction sites observations.

    You will need reliable transport, although air travel will be arranged with longer distances.

    Unit Standards 4098 is required for the role. You don't need this to apply, but you will need to complete the training within your first couple of months.

    It will also be a requirement to maintain your COVID-19 vaccination status, which could include additional booster vaccinations based on government advice.
