Our division

The School of Biomedical Sciences (BMS) leads research and academic advancement in biomedical and biological sciences and educates health professionals to enhance health and wellbeing locally, nationally and internationally.

  • BMS provides high-quality teaching and an innovative research environment for over 2500 University of Otago students. The Department of Physiology is home to approximately 100 staff, whose work focuses on three general areas : cardiovascular and respiratory physiology;
  • cellular and molecular neuroscience; and membrane physiology and ion transport.

    The role

    As a Mechanical Engineer, you will be responsible for the provision of efficient, high quality, cost-effective mechanical and electromechanical technical support for teaching and research in the Department of Physiology and secondarily to other Departments within the University of Otago.

    The role will involve :

  • maintenance and repair of specialised equipment;
  • professional mechanical design, advice, development, construction and repair services in support of staff and research students in the Department of Physiology; and
  • accurate record keeping and service information.
  • Your skills and experience

    It is expected that the incumbent will have a Trade Certificate (e.g. Trade Certificate or Advanced Trade Certificate in Toolmaking and / or instrument making) as a large part of the work will involve design and manufacture of precision scientific apparatus.

    Applicants should have the ability to relate well to students, academic and professional staff and work efficiently, with minimal supervision in a team environment.

    Preference will be given to applicants who are registered as an Electrical Service Technician, followed by practical experience in their chosen trade demonstrating skills in the following :

  • A sound knowledge of mechanical engineering and modern manufacturing methods;
  • Material machining using a lathe and mill;
  • Experience in electrical and gas welding to high-vacuum standards; and
  • A sound knowledge of materials for metal, wood and plastic work.
  • Full drivers licence is required for this position. You will also need to be able to demonstrate sound computer skills and be capable of using technical software for design.

    In addition, you will also have :

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Problem solving skills; and
  • Flexible, adaptable and professional attitude with strong customer focus.
