We are the carers for Northland's environment and community. Are you one of us?

A few things you should know about Northland Regional Council we aren't about parking tickets, roading, building consents or any of that stuff! Our work is ultimately about working together to care for our region's incredible environment and many communities, matching our skills and resources with the vision and aspirations of our people.

Toitū te whenua, toitū to moana, toitū te tangata. If the land is well, if the sea is well, the people will thrive.

The role :

Working within a team of 10 environmental monitoring and compliance officers, this role will see you undertake and provide compliance monitoring of resource consents and permitted activities, including the investigation of environmental incidents and related enforcement.

Whilst the activities monitored are predominantly water takes and dams, involvement in other areas of compliance could include anything from investigating unauthorised discharges of contaminants, to ensuring appropriate controls on a consented site are in place and meet national regulations and best practice.

Some of the key responsibilities will include :

  • Preparing and implementing monitoring programmes for resource consents;
  • Carrying out inspections, investigations and taking samples and measurements in response to environmental incidents;
  • Conducting inspections as a warranted enforcement officer and undertaking enforcement actions as required; and
  • Informing and educating stakeholders on RMA compliance.
  • Do you have what it takes?

    We are looking for someone who is able to communicate effectively with our external customers and stakeholders on a range of environmental monitoring topics.

    This is a challenging and varied role and you will need to have tough skin at times when dealing with enforcement situations, as well as be self-motivated, and able to work unsupervised and as part of a team.

    Sound knowledge of the Resource Management Act and Regional Council monitoring functions is an advantage, along with experience in the preparation, implementation and management of monitoring programmes.

    What's in it for you?

    Our team has grown a lot over the years, but our small organisation culture is still here. We celebrate our efforts, share wedding / baby pictures, host many shared morning teas, enjoy outings, annual fishing competitions and brunches, and have a lot of fun together.

    We have an active social club that comes up with great ideas, but if you're also interested in the tangible stuff, we have that too - check out our benefits here.
