Aoraki Environmental Consultancy Limited ("AEC") is looking for an environmental planner to join the team at our Timaru office.

The successful applicant must have a passion for Maori perspectives and be able to advise, advocate, and make a difference in a unique and interesting role.

AEC is a charitable company established to ensure Te Runanga o Arowhenua are able to contribute to key decision-making processes that impact on the management of natural resources in our takiwa.

  • We advise and support our clients with identifying and managing Maori values in a resource management context. Our clients include local and regional government, and major infrastructure providers;
  • these organisations need high quality advice to enable them to provide for mana whenua in decision making.

    As AEC is owned by Te Rūnanga o Arowhenua, the role also supports Maori representatives across a range of processes, including providing input into regional and national policy.

    This role is high visibility - working as a key contact for the large range of organisations that engage with Maori in South Canterbury on a wide range of issues.

    The successful candidate will need to be able to develop and maintain relationships with Papatipu Runanga, government departments, Local and Regional Council, the wider Ngai Tahu community, and other stakeholders.

    You will spend your day undertaking a huge range of tasks, including preparing management plans, facilitating consultation with Maori, developing Maori capacity, preparing and presenting submissions, advocacy, and assisting with policy development and research.

    To be successful in this role you will need to have :

  • demonstrated experience and a proven track record in the resource management field (minimum 3 years' experience);
  • a tertiary qualification in Planning, Geography, Environmental Science or equivalent experience;
  • outstanding communication and relationship building skills, and be comfortable working with a range of people with different perspectives;
  • a passion in promoting Maori interests, aspirations and values, and can communicate those to others;
  • a willingness to learn about tikanga Maori;
  • the ability to project manage the tasks;
  • familiarity with common IT packages, including MS Office suite.
  • What we are looking for is someone who has :

  • the experience and understanding of local government processes, including plan making, resource consents, and compliance functions;
  • an understanding of the Treaty of Waitangi, and how it influences policy in modern New Zealand;
  • an awareness of the range of different organisations and processes that manage New Zealand's natural and cultural environment;
  • experience developing and providing policy and strategic advice.
