Due to an internal secondment we are looking for an experienced advisor or data practitioner who is passionate about data and its quality in our Data Leadership and Capability team designed to build government’s capability in data and analytics, and that of New Zealand’s data system as a whole.

From our COVID-19 response and recovery experience, we have heard from agencies that they would like practical advice and guidance on what good data management practice is like particularly around data quality.

This work will involve design framework and tools that are customer centric and working with experts both from Stats and other NZ experts.

You will be expected to lead the work and facilitate the design and development through to effective implementation.

As the Senior Advisor you will increase the effectiveness of the Public Service by strengthening the government data system.

You will lead the delivery of thought leadership and developing innovative solutions, frameworks, training and guidance that uplifts data capability and open data sets across the public sector and data ecosystem.

You will have great connections across data communities, delivering positive outcomes by shaping and sharing solutions, and bringing an outside-in’ perspective.

Starting salary : $86,000 - $110,000 negotiable depending on the skills and experience

About you Mōu

  • Significant experience in a specialist role providing proven expertise and skills in data management and practices and stewardship.
  • Thrives in a dynamic, ambiguous and agile environment with can-do attitude to tackle challenges and uncertainty
  • Master of effective time management and prioritisation
  • Demonstrated experience to influence through networks, relationships, and using the levers available to achieve system outcomes
  • A broad knowledge of machinery of government and working in government agencies
  • Extensive experience in delivering results through relationships
  • Ability to develop and provide thought leadership around guidelines and framework development and its practical applications
  • Work effectively in a small, cross-functional team and be willing to carry out other tasks as required
  • An awareness of the business of Stats NZ gained through experience / familiarity with research, statistical environments or the data system in order to determine and drive value
  • Knowledge / familiarity or a commitment to learn / understand Te Ao Māori, including realising opportunities at Stats NZ reach the Māori communities
