As Senior Ranger (Biodiversity Threats) with the Department of Conservation you will be joining our talented Biodiversity team to lead a range of critical natural heritage conservation programmes in South Westland.

This is an opportunity to fill a leadership role as a Senior Ranger supporting the Operations Manager in achieving Biodiversity Threats work outcomes for the District.

The role will involve the planning and execution of technical work programmes relating to :

  • Tiakina Nga Manu - landscape aerial pest control and includes DOC's work with others such as TBfree and Zero Invasive Predators
  • South Westland's weed control
  • Tahr management
  • Contract management
  • Regional management of Aquatic Weeds
  • Conservation Law Compliance
  • Fire response team
  • Operational planning (monthly, annual and 4 yearly) and associated performance reporting requirements.
  • This is a complex role that requires a very good ability to be organised, accurate and punctual with deadlines. The successful applicant must be able to handle an intense workload across a diverse range of activities that are often high profile.

    You must be able to keep your cool under pressure, while still delivering on designated tasks. Your role is very future focussed, so you must be able to plan adaptively for long term success of the programmes and ensure the team you work with is capable and organised to deliver-on these goals.

    The successful applicant will have :

  • a strong commitment to Safety and Wellbeing in the workplace
  • a natural heritage or conservation management qualification
  • specialist experience / qualifications in animal and plant pest control, including aquatic pest plants.
  • strong planning, organising and financial management skills and experience.
  • contract and project management experience
  • the ability to work closely with tangata whenua
  • skilled at coaching, training and supporting staff with the acquisition of technical knowledge
