Congratulations on qualifying as a midwife, we would love to support your midwifery career in the greater Wellington region and we provide great graduate midwifery programmes.

We provide maternity care to people requiring primary and secondary level care in our maternity facilities and tertiary level obstetric care at Wellington Regional Hospital.

All our units are Baby-Friendly Hospital accredited. Our midwives provide care to pregnant people and their families across the midwifery scope including those with uncomplicated pregnancies and births as well as those requiring complex medical care.

Wellington is the coolest little capital in the world’ with Lower Hutt a short drive up the motorway. Wellington is the country’s cultural capital and thrives with museums, theatre and arts festivals as well as many sporting events.

It is easy to get around with fantastic public transport and small enough to walk almost anywhere.

Discover the colourful cafés and art galleries, sunny seaside neighbourhoods of Eastbourne and Petone bush walks with harbour views and the iconic Pencarrow Coast.

With many great forest walks, overnight tramping trips and thrilling mountain biking trails - the Hutt Valley is an outdoor haven.

Our graduate programmes

All midwives who have successfully completed a Bachelor in Midwifery degree, have been entered on to the New Zealand Midwifery Council Register, and are enrolled in the New Zealand Midwifery First Year of Practice Programme (MFYP) are able to apply for a position on either of our Graduate Midwifery Programmes.

Each year Capital and Coast DHB and Hutt Valley DHB offer positions for graduate midwives who will work 64 hours per fortnight (0.

8 FTE) rostered and rotating shifts. Both programmes span 54 weeks and will enable the midwife to consolidate their midwifery knowledge and practical skills within a supportive environment.

After the new graduate programme finishes the graduates will become permanent members of the midwifery workforce.

Study days

Meeting your Midwifery Council requirements will be easily achieved as we offer regular midwifery education including :

  • Midwifery Emergency Skills Refresher Day
  • Fetal Surveillance Education Programme
  • Breastfeeding
  • Epidural workshop
  • Violence Intervention Programme
  • We offer regular midwifery forums dedicated to midwifery practice and resilience, educational multidisciplinary meetings such as perinatal mortality reviews, research presentations and current topics of interest, and micro teaching throughout the year.

    We are closely linked to Otago and Victoria University both of which have campuses onsite at Wellington Regional Hospital, and Otago Polytechnic.

    Education in the clinical area is also supported by our Midwifery Educators, Clinical Coaches and Midwife Managers there is always support available.


    We have supportive teams who nurture new graduates and each other. Our senior teams include the Directors of Midwifery and Midwife Managers.

    Our obstetric teams are respectful and collaborative. We all work alongside our LMC colleagues and endeavor to provide the best care for parents and babies.

    Each area and all shifts are led by a Clinical Midwife Manager (CMM). We are also well supported by clinical midwife specialists, lactation consultants, social workers and a variety of other health professionals.

    We also work closely with our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) and Gynaecology areas.

    Together across the maternities facilities we are here to provide excellent care for pregnant people, babies and whānau and to continue a culture of caring through our teams.
