Technician Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the RoleAn exciting new position has recently been created for a Technician at the Animal Health Laboratory (AHL) based at Wallaceville Upper Hutt, New Zealand.

The position will be based within the immunology team and, primarily, will be focused on building diagnostic throughput using automated platforms - this will enhance our preparedness for managing large scale exotic disease responses.

You will also be expected to support diagnostics and specimen reception, also within the immunology team, on an as needed basis following appropriate training.

The ideal candidate will be one who :

  • Has an understanding of how a diagnostic laboratory operates.
  • Has some experience with ELISA and PCR.
  • Has a critical eye to look for process improvement.
  • is a great communicator.
  • sees problems as opportunities.
  • is a self-starter and finisher. Mōu - About YouThe technician role will require a broad set of skills to succeed :
  • As the high through put capability develops in the lab you will be expected to speak in front of groups and train others.
  • After training you will be expected to assist in the immunology diagnostics to help with workload when required.
  • Equally, after training you will be expected to work confidently in specimen reception where multi-tasking, flexibility, and an attention to detail are key.
  • You will be compliant at following detailed procedures within the facility. you will be expected to identify and rectify issues as they arise, amending processes accordingly.
  • You will be expected to accept and look for new challenges both in the short and longer term you will therefore be a good starter / finisher.

  • Mō tō mātou rōpū - About the TeamAHL is part of the Diagnostic and Surveillance Services Directorate, within Biosecurity New Zealand (BNZ);
  • and BNZ is part of the Ministry for Primary Industries.The AHL has recently moved into its all-new purpose-built laboratory with state-of-the-art facilities.

    The laboratory operates at PC2 and PC3+ containment levels (the highest there is nationally). The AHL is internationally accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 : 2018, which requires fully auditable processes to be maintained.

    Our purpose is to grow and protect New Zealand. During exotic disease responses we are required to deliver results promptly and accurately to enable rapid eradication and return to disease freedom status as quickly as possible, thereby allowing the reopening of international trade.

  • More generally, our business as usual work deals with time-pressured diagnostics to certify livestock and other animals are free from disease and thereby maintain trade for export and import;
  • and we perform important surveillance work to demonstrate maintained national disease freedom status. We maintain a portfolio of capability for over 400 diagnostic tests.

  • most preferably a NZ citizen, who has resided continuously in NZ for at least the last five (5) years, OR
  • is a citizen of, and / or has resided continuously in one or more of the following countries for the last five (5) years : either Australia, Canada, NZ, the United Kingdom (UK) or the United States of America (USA);
  • and has a background history that is verifiable and can be assessed as appropriate by the NZ Security Intelligence Service (NZSIS) towards a recommendation of suitability for a security clearance at this level.
