Our Tax Controversy team provides an end-to-end Tax Controversy service. We are looking for a Senior Associate to join our team.
The role is extremely varied. As a Senior Associate you will advise clients on a broad range of tax matters with a focus on the technical and tactical management of all types of tax, including tax administration, complex tax matters, transfer pricing and the anti-avoidance rules.
You will assist our clients in all stage on the tax lifecycle including tax governance and controls testing, tax advice, binding rulings, voluntary disclosures, audits, disputes and court.
Your key responsibilities
Drawing on your tax experience, in your role as a Senior Associate you’ll :
Handle, assess and mitigate tax risk for our clients.
Lead the management of tax disputes and other contentious tax matters (including audits, disputes and litigation).
Analyse research and deliver high quality legal advice that is commercially focussed.
Manage our client’s tax risk by developing and testing governance frameworks bespoke to the organisation, seeking binding rulings from Inland Revenue, making voluntary disclosures and using other tax risk mitigation techniques.
Keep up to date with the latest tax developments and develop thought leadership - identifying relevant issues for our clients and deliver that information to them in a comprehensive and comprehensible manner.
Work with both existing and new clients to help build a distinctive client experience and enduring relationships.
Work with staff to develop their technical and business acumen and help staff achieve their career objectives.
Skills and attributes for success
To qualify for the role, you must
Be admitted to the New Zealand High Court as a barrister and solicitor.
Have proven problem solving abilities and be able to deliver commercially driven solutions.
Be technically curious and enjoy getting involved in a range of cutting-edge projects.
Have a demonstrated ability to assimilate complex tax concepts into everyday business language.
Ideally, you’ll also have
Experience in a Big 4 Accounting firm in tax compliance and / or tax advisory.
Proven leadership experience and experience in managing staff on multiple engagements.
Strong and broad relationships with current and prospective clients and established relationships with Inland Revenue.
An ability to work with a number of different clients and internal stakeholders on multiple deadlines delivering a high level of client service.
A proven ability to manage engagement metrics and generate revenue by having a strong market presence.
