Investigating, monitoring and reporting on the state of Canterbury’s biodiversity and ecosystems is a core responsibility of Canterbury Regional Council which has received extra impetus and new direction through the 2020 National Policy Statement Freshwater Management and the upcoming National Policy Statement for Indigenous Biodiversity.

Are you experienced in data analysis and interested in being involved in ecological science to improve understanding of Canterbury’s indigenous biodiversity?

Would you like to work within a team of terrestrial and wetland ecologists to monitor and report on this aspect of the state of the region’s environment?

Do you want to contribute to biodiversity protection and enhancement in the region through provision of quality data and data analysis?

If so, then this position offers you the opportunity to develop your career as a Senior Science Analyst in our Land Ecology Monitoring and Investigations Team.

This is a permanent full-time position.

About the Role Kōrero mō te tūranga

Based in our Christchurch or Timaru office, you will support our terrestrial and wetland ecology work by planning and implementing programmes for the processing, storage and quality control of data gathered for Environment Canterbury’s ecology and biodiversity monitoring programmes.

You will also support our work by analysing and interpreting ecological data, preparing environmental reports, providing technical advice to other sections of Council and externally, and undertaking field work and investigations.

About You Mōu

To be successful in this role you will have the following experience and skills

  • A master’s degree in a relevant field plus 2 years professional experience, or a bachelor’s degree plus 5 years professional experience.
  • A good understanding of data storage, data management and quality assurance processes, and the ability to undertake advanced data analysis developing or using appropriate techniques.
  • Demonstrated computer and programming skills using a range of computer software including databases, spreadsheets, statistical and graphics applications, GIS (preferably ArcGIS Pro).
  • A background or training in ecological science with experience in monitoring NZ terrestrial and wetland ecosystems.
  • The ability to identify, investigate and resolve data issues.
  • Good writing and presentation skills.
  • Strong communication and relationship building skills.
  • A knowledge of and comfort with Mātauranga Māori.
  • A current drivers licence.
