About Beachcomber Restaurant & Bar : Beachcomber Restaurant & Bar is situated on the main street of Kaitaia in the beautiful winterless Far North of New Zealand.

The restaurant was established over 40 years ago and until today got a strong reputation amongst locals as well as travellers.

The premise can accommodate over 80 guests and we pride ourselves for freshly cooked, European style food, using local produce wherever possible.

We are looking for applicants with the following skills, qualities and experience :

  • well groomed with excellent timekeeping and multitasking skills;
  • passionate about great food of exceptional quality and delivering a great service;
  • experience with organising and running a kitchen effectively and calmly and leading a team of kitchen staff.
  • good work history in quality dining establishments;
  • At least four years experience working as a chef;
  • experience in baking and dessert making (skills in pastry, pie and cake baking, kneading and bread baking and making of ice cream from scratch would be desired);
  • experience with planning and cooking for catering and banquets;
  • able to cope with long working hours, particularly during our busiest periods (weekly hours vary but are around 35 hours per week);
  • able to work split shifts, mornings, evenings, weekends and public holidays;
  • flexible and able to quickly pick up new techniques or execute new recipes;
  • being a team player and work with the rest of the staff until each service is finished;
  • have a full driver’s licence or being able to get one;
  • fit enough to do all tasks appointed to you and not have any medical or other reasons why you cannot perform in the job;
  • able to pass drug checks.

    General description of position : As the Sous Chef you will be required to assist the Head Chef in planning and organising the preparation and cooking of food for the Beachcomber Restaurant.

    You will be expected to lead the kitchen team in the Head Chef’s absence. You will assist the Head Chef in the operation of the kitchen and be monitoring the quality of each dish at all stages of preparation to ensure the company's reputation for food is maintained at all times.

    Each dish leaving the kitchen must be checked for quality, presentation and correct temperatures. You will be planning new menus throughout the year and for special occasions and events, estimating food and labour costs, ordering produce and liaising with suppliers to ensure necessary stocks are on hand, of the correct quantity and quality.

    You will report and discuss any food preparation issues with Head Chef, management, and other staff when necessary. You will also assist with ensuring that communications between the front of house and kitchen teams run smoothly.

    You may be involved with training existing and new staff with preparation and cooking of food, teaching new skills and demonstrating cooking techniques as well as explaining and enforcing hygiene regulation.

    You will also be expected to assist generally with other tasks related to the operation of the kitchen food preparation where necessary.
