Waikato Museum has an exciting opportunity for an experienced Collections and Exhibitions Manager to join its committed team.

We’re located in Hamilton, on the banks of the Waikato River, and we’re striving to become the best regional museum in New Zealand.

Integral to our growth is the Collections and Exhibitions Manager role we’re currently recruiting for. We need a proven museum industry professional to join us to develop and manage sustainable exhibition programmes that enriches lives and challenges people’s understanding of the world.

Reporting to the Museum Director, this position is responsible for managing museum exhibitions and collections while leading a team of Curators, Registrars, Designers and Preparators.

Other key aspects include :

  • establishing a positive team culture, encouraging teamwork to deliver effective and efficient outcomes
  • participate and contribute to the vision and museums long-term plan and strategy
  • deliver diverse exhibitions (including local, national and international) in a range of settings, at the museum, in the community and online
  • management of the museum collections ensuring documentation, inventory control, physical handling and environmental issues are managed to current best practice
  • build constructive relationships with funding and community stakeholders, donors, lenders and artists across the sector in New Zealand and internationally.
  • Ideally, you will hold a post-graduate qualification in museum studies or similar and have a Masters degree in Fine Arts, Art History or equivalent.

    You will have a minimum of five years experience leading an exhibitions and / or collections team in a museum or art gallery.

    In addition, you will have five or more years leadership experience and have an extensive background in project management.

    You’ll be a robust and assertive people leader who is able to get the best from their team, and can set and meet clear expectations.

    You will be an innovative thinker who is solutions-focussed and is able to take a pragmatic approach to all aspects of your work.

    This role requires someone who has high attention to detail and who is highly structured and organised.
