Do you want to play a part in making New Plymouth District a Sustainable Lifestyle Capital? Our Governance Team is seeking a professional, enthusiastic and hardworking Governance Advisor to support good decision-making processes.

This is a full time, permanent position in a great team. You’ll be totally focused on delivering the highest quality of work to the Elected Members, Council staff and community.

With responsibility for driving and supporting end-to-end meeting processes you need to be proficient in Microsoft Office and able to demonstrate experience in operating in a digital environment.

To be successful in this role you will have the ability to work with integrity and confidentiality in a dynamic political environment.

An eye for detail, a calm demeanour and a solutions focused, can-do attitude is a must.

This role isn't just about following a set of rules. Where there aren't any black and white answers and the way forward isn't clear, you'll need sound judgement and decision making skills for dealing with varied situations often within the public eye.

If you are successful in this role, you will be reliable, resilient and able to manage a high demand workload within tight deadlines.

POSITION : Governance Advisor

JOB LEVEL : Technical Specialist

REPORTS TO : Governance Lead

GROUP : Strategy

POSITION PURPOSE :

Provision of administrative and secretarial services to support the council, its committees, community boards, hearings commissioners and their decision-making processes.

KEY RELATIONSHIPS

  • Integrated - Chief Executive, Group Manager Strategy, Mayor and elected members and appointed community representatives
  • External - New Plymouth citizens
  • KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES :

  • Provide impartial advice and support to elected members, the Executive Leadership Team, staff and the public
  • Attend meetings and record minutes in accordance with legislative requirements and the Council’s Standing Orders
  • Plan and prepare for meetings, including but not limited to the production of meeting notices, preparation and distribution of agenda, minutes and resolutions for action, room bookings and catering
  • Coordinate the receipt of submissions and hearings processes for consultation processes
  • Assist with the planning and preparation for elections and post-election induction
  • Actively ensure that legislative requirements and Council policies and procedures are fulfilled, particularly in relation to all key relevant legislation

  • QUALIFICATIONS / EXPERIENCE :

  • A relevant tertiary degree is desirable
  • Knowledge of local authority law and procedures
  • Knowledge of meeting procedures
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office
  • Experience operating in a digital environment
