What you will do

As the Assistant Director Strategic Engagements (Regional) (ADSE-R) you'll support the NZDF's contribution to international engagement through the development of robust bilateral and multilateral defence relationships that advance New Zealand's national security interests, and build influence and trust with international security partners.

You'll contribute to the development of defence and whole of government Policy and the creation and implementation of Military Engagement Strategies.

Working closely with other functional areas in Headquarters New Zealand Defence Force, Ministry of Defence and Headquarters Joint Forces New Zealand as well as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, other government and non-

government agencies and foreign militaries to achieve this purpose.

The ADSE-R area of focus is all countries in Oceania, Southeast Asia and Australia, including those regional security organisations with relevance to defence, and as such some travel is required.

You'll stay abreast of current and future events and activities via research and investigation, attend regular meetings and build relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including foreign partners.

In this role you'll be managing a diverse range of topics and projects concurrently and will need to have systems and processes in place in order to do so.

What we need

A driven and motivated person with the ability to work autonomously and strengths in relationship building and relationship management.

You'll need to be confident in engaging with other government agencies, with robust negotiation and influencing skills. You'll have strengths in organisation / time management and prioritisation of tasks to meet deadlines and changing priorities.

Your analytical nous, investigative skills and ability to consider and assess multiple information streams to provide robust advice are crucial to your success in this role.

You'll be adept at conveying complex information in a logical and concise manner both in writing and verbally.

Our ideal candidate is experienced with strategy planning or project management in a large, complex environment and has a tertiary qualification in strategic or defence studies, international relations, political science or equivalent experience.

Who we are

The Strategic Commitments and Engagement Branch (SCE Br) is responsible for the strategic development, planning, and oversight of the NZDF's international engagement profile in support of New Zealand's defence and security objectives and broader international interests.

It is led by Assistant Chief Strategic Commitments and Engagement (AC SCE) and is divided into two Directorates : Strategic Commitments (DSC) and Strategic Engagement (DSE).

DSE supports the NZDF's vision and mission by providing strategic coordination of international military diplomacy and military to military engagement activities.

The Directorate works closely with other functional areas in Headquarters New Zealand Defence Force (HQNZDF), Ministry of Defence (MoD), and Headquarters Joint Forces New Zealand (HQJFNZ) as well as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFAT), other government agencies, non-

government agencies and foreign militaries to achieve this purpose.

The minimum citizenship and residency criteria for security clearances to be granted by the NZ Defence Force are as follows :

Higher level Security Clearance

  • most preferably a NZ citizen who has resided continuously in this country for the last 10 years , OR
  • is a citizen of, and / or has resided continuously in one or more of the following countries for the last 10 years : either Australia, Canada, NZ, UK or the USA;
  • and has a background history that is verifiable and can be assessed as appropriate by the NZSIS towards a recommendation of suitability for a security clearance at a higher level.

    If you do not meet these minimum criteria, we will not be able to accept your application.
