About the role
The Health and Safety Policy team lead advice on strategic issues across work health and safety and energy safety including :
Regulatory reform : Designing and delivering modern regulations to support a step change in New Zealand's health and safety outcomes at work.
Current areas of focus include machinery, vehicles and structures, adventure activities, and hazardous substances
System priorities : Supporting the implementation of the Government's Health and Safety at Work Strategy and responding to emerging areas such as work-related mental health and psycho-social risks (including stress and bullying) and whether the current policy settings are sufficient
System performance : How we measure and understand the performance of the health and safety at work system
System interfaces : Advising on the interfaces with other sectors that influence health and safety at work e.g. health, transport, environment and ACC, and working closely with other agencies on cross-system issues
Oversight of system levers and funding matters , including advice about the roles and priorities of regulators.
We work closely with other policy and operational teams and experts within MBIE in Workplace and Labour Markets as well as other ministries, stakeholders and international counterparts.
Who we're looking for
You are a highly motivated, credible problem solver, experienced in policy development. This role will suit the following skills and attributes :
Experience leading complex policy projects within central government, particularly regulatory change
Understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles and application of these in public policy and in partnership with Māori
Wide ranging knowledge of policy development disciplines and processes
Strong stakeholder relationship building, influencing and engagement skills to gain the cooperation and commitment of others, from Ministers to stakeholders
Ability to work with technical detail and use others' knowledge to understand implications of policy choices
Passion for leading and coaching others to develop their policy craft and take their careers to the next level
The ability to work through ambiguity and deliver results
