Cancer Psychosocial Service (CPS), Southern Blood and Cancer Service

  • Up to 1.0FTE is available (up to 40 hours per week)
  • Covering Otago and Southland (District wide), and / or Central Otago

  • Our Cancer Psychological and Social Work Service team (CPS) at Southern District Health Board is looking for an experienced Clinical Psychologist / Psychologist / Psychotherapist to join our multi-disciplinary team on a permanent, full-time basis to cover the Otago and Southland (district wide) region, along with the Central Otago region.

    We are also open to appointing two candidates into this role on a part-time basis so welcome applications from those interested in covering either the Otago / Southland region, or the Central Otago region.

    About the Team / Service

    The CPS team, is part of Southern Blood & Cancer Service. Working collaboratively across the Otago & Southland region CPS provides psychosocial support to people with a high suspicion of cancer at the front of the pathway, and those with a cancer diagnosis who are engaged in cancer treatments who have complex psychological and social need.

    This later focus was part of a Ministry of Health initiative which commenced throughout NZ in 2015.

    About the Role what’s in it for me?

    The overall objective of these roles is to provide psychological support with a brief intervention focus for patients with cancer or suspected cancer by delivering evidence-based assessment and interventions.

    This role was originally established to improve access to psychological and social support services for adults with cancer.

    It is a rare and very exciting opportunity to be part of the team that continues to develop since the Ministry of Health initiative was completed back in June 2020.

    The CPS remain committed to the MOH specifications, and guidelines, goals and philosophies of the Southern Cancer Network.

    The Psychologists / Psychotherapists will not only work in close collaboration with the Southern Blood & Cancer CPS but will also work closely with other health professionals, organisations and stakeholders, including primary care practitioners and non-government organisations who have a supportive care function locally and regionally.

    We are looking to appoint into this role on a regional basis :

  • Dunedin / Southland
  • Central Otago
  • The successful candidate / s will need to have the flexibility to undertake travel as necessary
  • About You

    Candidates should be knowledgeable and experienced in working with complex needs clients and able to demonstrate excellent assessment, formulation, treatment planning and therapy skills.

    You should be experienced in working in the health sector, preferably with people with cancer. You will be a confident and effective communicator, bring a flexible approach with excellent organisational skills, be passionate about your work and hold an unwavering belief in people’s resilience in the face of these often-unfavourable life crises.

    You will also be a strong supportive team player and be proactive in the multidisciplinary team. You will also be required to travel to see clients in the wider region.

    Candidates must have the required professional qualification to be able to be registered and hold an annual practising certificate in the profession of Clinical Psychology / Psychology and / or Psychotherapy and will ideally have a minimum of 3 years’ experience.
