Allied Health Assistant (Activities Assistant) - Intellectual Disability Service

  • About the Team

    The Intellectual Disability Service (IDS) is part of the Specialist Mental Health Services based at Wakari Hospital, high above Dunedin with stunning views of the city and ocean.

    The IDS comprises of three parts, Ward 10a a 12 bed inpatient service, Helensburgh Cottage a 4 bed inpatient rehabilitation unit and the Community Liaison Team.

    You will work alongside the multidisciplinary team comprising of Registered Nurses, Enrolled Nurses, Mental Health Assistants, Occupational Therapists, Psychologists and Psychiatrists.

    About You

    Working within the Intellectual Disability Service at Wakari Hospital as our Activity Assistant, you’ll be an integral member of the team.

    We are keen to further develop our vocational programme for our patient group and you’ll work alongside the Occupational Therapist and other staff assisting in the planning, organising, implementation and evaluation of the therapeutic programme on the ward that provides people opportunities to engage in psycho-educational, skills based, social and leisure groups.

    These are designed to enhance quality of life and independence for people with intellectual disabilities and encourage and support client participation and rehabilitation.

    To be considered for this role you must be able to demonstrate an affinity for working with people with intellectual disabilities across the life span and be able to remain calm when challenging situations arise.

    You should also have very good interpersonal and communication skills; be well organised and possess good time management skills.

    Further training and coaching while on the job will be provided by our skilled team.

    A full clean driver licence is also required.
