About this role

  • Permanent and 12 month fixed term (Secondment) opportunity
  • Wellington CBD or Auckland CBD location with flexible working arrangements available
  • At the Financial Markets Authority (FMA) the work we do counts - it is challenging, unique and continuously evolving. We ensure better outcomes for investors, consumers and the New Zealand economy through our unwavering commitment to promoting and facilitating fair, efficient and transparent financial markets.

With a strong focus on learning and development, we empower our people to shape their roles. This means you'll have the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive in an environment that encourages expansion and flexibility.

We'll support you to be bold and proactive and we'll celebrate your achievements and success.

Right now, we have two opportunities for a Senior Solicitor to join our Corporate Legal Team, which sits within the FMA's broader General Counsel function.

The Corporate Legal team is responsible for the provision of pragmatic, high quality and effective legal advice required by the FMA to achieve its objectives.

The team is highly engaged, vibrant and collaborative, and is based across our Auckland and Wellington offices. The work we do is varied and intellectually challenging, and in this role, you'll collaborate with other Corporate Legal and General Counsel team members on a broad range of legal issues.

It's a fast-paced and rewarding role offering the chance to work at the forefront of New Zealand's financial markets. You'll bring an agile mind, be solutions-focussed, have strong interpersonal and relationship skills, and have a great sense of humour.

You'll also be an open, friendly person who values a collaborative working environment.

This is an in-house legal role with a wide range of responsibilities including -

  • working with the FMA's front line operational teams to manage legal issues in relation to our engagement with market participants and the regulation of New Zealand's capital markets and financial services,
  • engaging with market participants and their advisers in relation to legal issues,
  • providing advice within the FMA on the use of regulatory tools (such as stop orders, warnings, and licensing actions) in response to non-compliance,
  • leading individual exemptions and designations and providing advice within the FMA on class exemptions and designations, and
  • contributing to policy development, FMA guidance, law reform, and key projects within the FMA.
  • Ideally you will have 8 years+ financial services experience and regulatory or government experience is also desirable (but not necessary).

You will enjoy thinking through interesting and novel legal issues and your drive, enthusiasm, self-motivation and confidence will contribute to your success in this role.

At the FMA, you'll be proud knowing that the work you do is creating a legacy for New Zealand. We offer flexible working arrangements and a variety of wellness activities.

A strong emphasis is placed on your life outside the workplace, and diversity and inclusion are championed in an environment where we all have the opportunity to reach our full potential.
