The Waikato Spine Fellowship is a comprehensive program for an aspiring Spine Surgeon delivered by three fellowship-trained surgeons.
With a combined volume of over 400 cases a year the Fellow will be exposed to techniques addressing pathology from occiput to pelvis including anterior and posterior, minimally invasive and open approaches.
With the exception of early onset scoliosis all pathology is treated : degenerative 45%, trauma 25%, infection 10%, deformity 15%, tumour 5%.
Cervical pathology comprises approximately 25%, thoracic 20% and lumbar 55%.
Experience is gained through attendance at operating sessions in both public and private settings, weekly outpatient spine clinics and academic pursuits (if desired).
For selected candidates, after an initial period of assessment, the opportunity will exist to take 'spine call' with consultant back-up available.
Attendance at one major international spine meeting / course is encouraged as is attendance at the New Zealand Orthopaedic Spine Society Annual Meeting.
For Orthopaedic surgeons, additional duties involving participation in the general orthopaedic trauma service are available.
6 and 12 month Fellowships are possible but preference is given to candidates pursuing 12 months.
