As the Principal Engineer, you will : - help define engineering excellence at Xero- lead initiatives to grow the technical capabilities of engineers- evolve the technical architecture of our software to support our product roadmaps- collaborate with teams to deliver software to our customers at scale and maintain it once in productionThis role is part of the Practice portfolio.

We deliver software solutions to help accountants and bookkeepers to do beautiful work. As a Principal Engineer, you will be a strategic contributor helping re-engineer our core foundational technology.

Our goal is to deliver seamless user experiences, strong public APIs, data consistency, and strong infrastructure engineering across all of the tools our customers and partners use.

What you'll be doing : You’ll be a beacon of engineering excellence and will help the engineering teams in our portfolio to develop the engineering maturity required to autonomously deliver on their goals.

The role is less about hands-on coding, and more about collaborating with a variety of roles and stakeholders, like architects, lead engineers, designers and senior managers.

This role is not a people management one but it is all about leadership. The engineers in the teams around you will grow in capability and confidence by working with you

Some of the key responsibilities for this role are :

  • Work alongside key leaders to establish long-term product and technology strategies.
  • Help investigate and propose solutions to key technical challenges across the portfolio.
  • Align teams to a common set of engineering principles and standards.
  • Establish balance between innovation and standardisation.
  • Provide guidance on non-functional design elements in solutions including security, scalability and performance, monitoring and alerting, analytics, documentation and quality
  • Support and mentor other engineers
  • Lead by example and solve interesting and challenging delivery problems across product boundaries.
  • What we’re looking for

  • Extensive technical leadership experience across one or more of the following; Public and private API design and implementation, Cloud native DevOps and Security, modern web apps architecture, modern front-end engineering and architecture
  • A strong team player who is highly skilled in collaborating with others
  • A passion for coaching and mentoring engineers
  • An ability to influence and lead non technical audiences to better outcomes
  • An excellent communicator
  • Proven track record of delivering modern and distributed technical solutions
  • Proven track record supporting systems in production
  • A continuous improvement mindset
