What you will do

NZDF's Communication and Information Systems (CIS) Branch procures ICT products and services of significant value from ICT vendors.

Effective management of these vendors is essential, and as the Senior Commercial Manager, reporting to the Business Services Manager, you will be the key connection point between NZDF and your assigned ICT vendors.

In this role you will need to build effective relationships with both NZDF stakeholders and our vendors to ensure that requirements and expectations are managed on both ends.

You will also act as the first escalation point for any issues relating to vendor governance and performance.

In addition you will :

  • Collaborate with the Commercial Portfolio Manager to develop vendor roadmaps and strategies on how to manage individual vendors;
  • Lead the creation of service specifications e.g. SLAs and KPIs;
  • Ensure vendor performance is tracked, monitored and regularly reviewed against SLAs and KPIs;
  • Record, manage and, when required, escalate risks in line with NZDF risk management frameworks.
  • As a senior member of a newly created team of commercial managers, you will take on the management of vendors of high value, risk, and / or complexity.

    You will also coach and mentor more junior team members and actively support continued improvement and development of commercial management practices within CIS Branch.

    What we need

    This role would be a good fit for you if you have several years' experience in the ICT industry including a solid background in commercial ICT management.

    You'll also have :

  • Knowledge and skills in vendor and contract management in a complex ICT environment
  • Practical experience in product and / or service procurement and an understanding of procurement practices within the public sector
  • An understanding of the government rules of sourcing
  • Strong problem solving skills and negotiation skills
  • Excellent business and interpersonal skills including the ability to influence internal and external senior stakeholders
  • Well-developed analytical skills with the ability to think strategically and laterally
  • The ability to work with web based communication and procurement tools
  • Experience in coaching and mentoring junior team members
  • Ideally you'll also have a qualification in a commercial discipline or equivalent experience. ITIL certification is an advantage.

    You must be able and willing to travel within New Zealand and overseas as required.

    Please note : that we are currently working through our longer-term office location requirements in the broader Wellington area.

    In the interim, you would need to be able to work from our current CIS offices across the Wellington and Hutt Valley region.

    The full remuneration band for this position is $99,123 - $122,446 inclusive of a 4% employer superannuation contribution, however, we expect to appoint around the midpoint, negotiable depending on experience.

  • most preferably a NZ citizen who has resided continuously in this country for the last 10 years , OR
  • is a citizen of, and / or has resided continuously in one or more of the following countries for the last 10 years : either Australia, Canada, NZ, UK or the USA;
  • and has a background history that is verifiable and can be assessed as appropriate by the NZSIS towards a recommendation of suitability for a security clearance at a higher level.
