Dunedin is experiencing the biggest growth in its economy in a decade, and at the heart of this is a construction boom, with large projects by the university already under way, and more in the pipeline such as the new Dunedin Hospital.

In addition, our heritage buildings are being revitalised, commercial buildings are being upgraded, earthquake strengthening projects are underway, and new dwellings are on the rise.

  • As a Building Compliance Officer, you will be primarily responsible for investigating complaints of non-compliant building work and ensuring compliance with the Building Act 2004;
  • the New Zealand Building Code and associated Regulations across Dunedin City. The role also includes the creation of and maintaining compliance schedules;
  • monitoring residential swimming pools; Building Compliance Certificates to support alcohol licence renewals; and change of building use applications.

    To be successful in this role, you will ideally have many of the following :

  • A minimum of 5 - 6 years' building trade or building compliance experience,
  • Well-developed investigative, research and problem solving skills
  • Ability to deliver fair, consistent and balanced technical decisions.
  • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal
  • Managing customer expectations in what at times can have multiple parties and emotive issues
  • Has the ability to quickly build rapport, trust and respect
  • Computer skills and knowledge associated with Microsoft suite of products
  • The appointee must hold or attain within 3 years of role commencement an appropriate NZQA qualification as per regulation 18 of the Building (Accreditation of Building Consent Authorities) Regulations 2006.

    Where the Council funds the training of the appropriate qualification, the appointee will be financially bonded for two years post attainment.

    L2 - 70,790 - 95,774
