We are currentlyrecruiting for a Learning Advisor Māori. This role will provide dedicated academicsupport to our Māori students as they navigate through their learning journey.

The LearningAdvisor Māori is part of the Academic Support Team. It is a varied role thatrequires a person who is adaptable and flexible.

  • A key purpose of the position isto work with Māori students in collaboration with schools and teaching staff. Working collaboratively to identify barriersto students’ success;
  • and deliver a range of academic support services.

    Key Accountabilities for LearningAdvisor Ngā takohanga matua

  • Provide student-centred services to learners requiring study skills, assignment or referencing support, literacy / numeracy, IT, maths, science and / or other assistance.
  • Provide one-to-one, group, online and in-class support to students as needs are identified.
  • Assist learners with learning conversations to understand their learner contracts and commitments, through initial assessments as appropriate e.
  • g. Personal Education Plans to help students develop individual learning plans (ILPs) and identify their skills, strengths and learning gaps.

  • Encourage students to develop as independent learners as they progress through their qualification.
  • Participate in and support allocated student events and activities.
  • Ensure all activities meet HR, H&S and financial requirements.
  • Ensure all systems and processes are cross institutional, seamless, equitable and meet the institutions priorities.
  • Develop effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • SpecialistArea Māori

    Thisposition holds the Māori academic support portfolio which requires theprioritisation and academic engagement of Māori students.

  • Anunderstanding of Te Ao Māori, and Tikanga is essential to this role,as is the recognition of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and knowledge of itsimplementation.
  • Understandingof, or fluency in Te Reo Māori.
  • Work across the institutions to refer students tothe appropriate Māori support teams Kaiwhakahaere Māori WelTec and Te WānangaMāori / Kaiwhakahaere Māori Whitireia to enable effective wrap-around support and appropriatereferrals.
  • Workproactively with tutorial staff to embed and develop academic skillsstrategies and generic skills to support Māori students’learning in a contextualised manner.
  • Build relationshipswith staff to support Māori students’academic success.
  • Keep up-to-date withthe programmes, courses, course content and pathways whichcontribute to Māori succeeding as Māori.
  • It is desirable that the applicant has an understandingand experience in the tertiary education sector working with Māori studentsacross all levels.

    We are interested inhearing from people who have a relevant qualification at an achievement levele.g. post-grad qualifications (or working towards).
