MidCentral Health services a population of around 180,000 people across the district. We provide maternity care at Palmerston North Hospital, Te Papaioea Primary Birthing Unit and Horowhenua Health Centre.
Palmerston North Hospital is a 350 bed facility. The Women’s Health Unit has an eight bed birthing suite, a 20 bed ante / postnatal ward and 8 bed midwifery led primary birthing facility.
There are approximately 2000 births per year in our region. You will have the opportunity to work in and orientate to a variety of settings including delivery suite, maternity ward (ante and postnatal), primary birthing, antenatal outpatients day unit and the community midwifery team.
We are a progressive unit and have developed specialist midwifery roles and are committed to ongoing professional development of the maternity workforce.
Our primary birthing unit is a stand-alone facility and midwifery led. Recent practice change initiatives include introducing a new Induction of Labour Regime which is contributing to a reduction in the caesarean section rate in our hospital and the TOGETHER project which has succeeded in dramatically reducing our term baby admissions to the neonatal unit.
Our midwives work across all of our maternity sites in partnership with women and their families / whanau and in collaboration with the multi-disciplinary team to deliver effective care.
We run a composite roster of 8 and 12 hour shifts working rostered, rotating shifts. Grads have the opportunity of 12 hours shifts once the orientation period is over. Financial Incentives
The Ministry of Health Voluntary Bonding Scheme is available to those graduates who are interested and offers a financial incentive to graduates that commit to working in our region.
