The Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu nomination and appointment process is being undertaken to appoint a new Ngāi Tahu representative to the DOC Species Recovery Group - Takahē.

Functions of the Species Recovery Group - Takahē

  • To recover Takahē from the threat of extinction.
  • Implement, monitor, and review the Species Recovery Plan.
  • Purpose of the role The purpose of this role is to represent the Ngāi Tahu perspective to the Species Recovery Group - Takahē ensuring that any issues of tribal significance are reported to Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu while also ensuring that tribal matters of significance are represented.

    Required skills, experience and qualifications

  • A keen interest in the conservation of threatened taonga species.
  • Ideally an understanding of relevant tikanga, including bird transfers and liaison with other iwi.
  • An understanding of Ngāi Tahu values in relation to species conservation and an ability to promote and articulate these values.
  • The ability to listen, analyse issues, participate in discussions, and reach consensus decisions.
  • Ideally able to communicate regularly by email.
  • The time and energy for Species Recovery Group meetings which includes an annual 1-3 day meeting, email correspondence and background reading.
  • Willingness to report back and keep the Office informed of issues arising.
  • Willingness to meet with Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu representatives on other Species Recovery Groups to discuss and develop matters of mutual interest.
  • Willingness to liaise with Papatipu Rūnanga.

  • Meeting details

    Normally an annual meeting of 1-3 days sometimes involving a field trip with a remuneration of $500 per day. Travel and accommodation expenses will also be met, either by DoC or Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu.
