About the role :

New Zealand's rivers are an extremely valuable environmental habitat, recreational playground, and culturally significant part of our communities.

Greater Wellington Regional Council works with communities to manage flood risk from the region's rivers and streams. We develop floodplain management plans, provide a free advice and consultation service, maintain and build flood protection works, work with the community to improve the environment and recreational opportunities, and provide flood warnings.

The role would suit students at the end of their second, third, or final years who are seeking professional work experience to fulfil their degree requirements.

Previous summer students have worked on technical analyses, asset management, river engineering, field work, data collection, and community engagement.

This work feeds into departmental activities such as resource consent applications, engineering design, floodplain management plan development, operational river management work and habitat enhancement.

We understand the development needs of engineering students and therefore will provide the necessary experience which meets your objectives.

Student engineers will be exposed to an interesting mix of work across the Wellington Region, tailored to your specific interests.

Skills and experience required :

  • Have an interest in the environment, engineering, and protecting people particularly in relation to rivers and streams
  • Work well as part of a team, but can be self-directed for periods of time once working on a task
  • Have good skills in Microsoft Office software experience with hydraulic modelling software and ArcGIS may be handy but not essential
