The National Party Leader's Office has an exciting opportunity for a Chief Press Secretary to lead the Media Team in the National Leader's Office.

You will work closely with the Leader, Head of Digital and the wider senior leadership team in developing and fine-tuning National's strategy and public messaging.

The Chief Press Secretary will provide leadership in the following key areas :

  • helping to shape National's overall media strategy and messaging, and ensuring the communications efforts of the wider National Leader's Office are consistent and coordinated
  • ensuring National MPs, and in particular the Leader, are appropriately briefed
  • managing the work programme of the Media Team, ensuring they develop and deliver media events, generate media stories, manage media issues, write key speeches and media releases, maintain strong media relationships, assist MPs with media appearances and write other forms of communications
  • mentoring and guiding a wide range of National Caucus Support staff, including those in the Media Team
  • identifying and maximising opportunities to progress National's communications agenda
  • ensuring that all media engagement is consistent with Speaker's Directions, policies, processes and overall strategy
  • Relationship skills are critical to the success of this role; you will be the interface between the Press Gallery and other media outlets, championing the continuous improvement of the Caucus' profile.

    Your team will work closely with the Leader and wider Caucus to strategically manage the Leader's day to day media and communication requirements.

    As a team leader, you will guide, mentor and advise our Press Secretaries and the wider National parliamentary team, to ensure a consistent approach to all matters within the Leader's Office and other offices.

    To succeed in this role, you will be a highly experienced media professional with a minimum of seven to ten years of relevant experience working in political and / or media organisations.

    You will have credibility, high personal and professional standards, a strong work ethic, able to assess risk, and the demonstrated ability to lead and develop a high performing team.

    Flexibility in hours will be required, including weekends, and the role will involve some travel. Parliament is a fast-paced and demanding environment where no two days are the same.

    This is an events-based role linked to the Leader of the Party working 40 hours per week. The appointing salary band for this role is $140,000 - $180,000 per annum.

    Appointments will be based on skills and experience.
