Senior Product Designer

What we’re about.

HospoConnect is a tech startup in the hospitality industry. Our digital platform connects wholesale food & beverage suppliers with their restaurant & cafe customers.

At the heart of HospoConnect is a desire to improve the lives of people in the hospitality industry. We believe in the power of smart design & beautiful code to impact our customers’ lives for good and our platform is already doing just that for our 500+ monthly users.

HospoConnect reduces the time, effort & cost it takes to complete transactions and fulfil orders, as well as improving our users’ business relationships and revenue opportunities.

About the role.

We’re looking for a Senior Product Designer to join our growing team. In this important role, you’ll help to establish the design culture of HospoConnect by producing clean and beautiful interface designs, and by extending and championing our design libraries.

You’ll work closely with developers & designers to see new features through to completion. You’ll be involved in the wider team discussions on product strategy & marketing plays.

Miscellaneous design tasks like designing t-shirts, marketing collateral, and social media posts will crop up and you’ll appreciate the variety they bring.

This is an exciting time to join HospoConnect given we are in an early stage of development with a proven track record and a keen sense of direction.

This role is for someone who is keen to leave a mark, not just tinker with someone else’s choices. Also, as HospoConnect is growing, opportunities for career development will continue to arise as you progress in the role.

Who we’re looking for.

This role is for an experienced digital designer who has been in the industry for 8+ years and possesses the following experience and attributes.

Product design experience. Where and how you gained this experience is less important than being able to demonstrate product design thinking in contrast to marketing or visual communication design.

This requires a zoom in / zoom out approach where you’re able to contribute to and lead the design process at a holistic and a detailed level, with a keen focus on interaction design.

Strong UI design skills. You’ll be a highly visual person who is able to develop clean, sophisticated, cohesive design components, patterns & layouts for complex software across a variety of platforms.

You’ll spend a lot of time in design software (Figma FTW).

Design library management. You’ll be experienced at establishing, contributing to, and working with design libraries. Given HospoConnect’s startup nature, our design libraries are still in development.

Your role will include championing the development and adoption of these libraries, working to build them while simultaneously undertaking project-based work.

  • Pragmatic design nerd. You’ll love a good deep-dive nerd chat about all things design. You’ll enjoy ranting about crappy user experiences you come across in your day-to-day life and how you would improve it;
  • after all, design is in your DNA, you can’t help it. But you’ll temper your design passion with pragmatism. We’re a startup;
  • we can’t afford to spend months perfecting interfaces and user journeys. You’ll see how excellent design fits into the bigger picture of what will make HospoConnect succeed.

Strong communication skills. You’ll know how to present your work to others and you’ll readily invite feedback. Collaborating with colleagues effectively online (eg, in Slack, Trello or on email) is essential as you’ll regularly handover work to the development team.

Your written skills will also be useful when writing, or helping to write, microcopy for user interfaces, and contributing to written documentation for external parties or marketing collateral.

Wider design skills. While not a core part of your role, there will be tasks beyond UI design such as contributing to brand development, marketing campaigns, t-shirt designs, miscellaneous print design, photography, etc.

You’ll relish the opportunity to stretch your design legs and bring your wider experience and passion to the table.

    In short :

We’re looking for a digital designer with 8+ years’ experience in building digital solutions :

    Product design experience & passion.

    Design library management experience.

Great written & verbal communication skills.

Ability to self-manage & work effectively with remote colleagues.

Wider design skills such as marketing, brand & visual communication design.

We have a flexible hybrid work style. You can work from home or the Wellington office, depending on the needs of you and the company.

We value time spent together as a team, but we are also set up to enable all core work activities to be done remotely.

Employee Share Offer Plan. You’ll be personally connected to the success of the company. Help the company grow and reap the reward in shares.

Feeling like a cog in the machine ? In this role, you will be an integral part of the team shaping the platform and the processes to support it.

Bring your experience, knowledge, and opinions to the table.

Tired of slow release cycles? We’re moving at pace! Informed by our customer research, we have a clear picture of what needs to be built and we’re excited about it.

But we’re also pragmatic, ensuring we balance our need for speed with sensible timelines and processes.

Bored by the industry your job is in? Finance? Government? We’re working with food! Everyone loves the hospitality industry : coffee, beer, pizza, eating out, bars that’s the industry we’re working with directly.

You’ll be up close and personal to this industry with delicious perks thrown in.
