Position Overview

The Database Engineer will play a critical role in developing and operating our Cassandra NoSQL environments. As we expand to support more broadly distributed clients we will need a DBA to help scale out, tune and administer our globally distributed Cassandra environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Troubleshoot Cassandra issues and performance bottlenecks.
  • Produce clear documentation for delivered solutions
  • Install new / rebuild existing servers and configure hardware, operating system, storage, applications, in accordance with standards and operational requirements.
  • Develop and maintain installation and configuration procedures.
  • Contribute to and maintain system standards.
  • Research and recommend innovative, and where applicable automate approaches for system administrations tasks.
  • Perform daily system monitoring, verifying the integrity and availability of all hardware, server resources, systems, and key processes, reviewing system and application logs, and verifying completion of scheduled job.
  • Repair and recover from hardware or software failures. Coordinate and communication with impacted constituencies.
  • Apply OS patches and upgrades, upgrade system administration tools and utilities. Configure / add new services as necessary.
  • Perform on-going performance tuning, hardware upgrades, and resource optimization as required. Configure CPU, memory, and disk partitions as required.
  • Required Experience / Skills :

  • Knowledge of IT architecture, infrastructure standards, database platforms and tools.
  • Expert level administration of SQL Server, MySQL or Cassandra database systems
  • Expert level LINUX background and Windows Cluster proficiency
  • Experience with orchestration and management tools.
  • Experience with SQL Server, MySQL or Cassandra.
  • Strong preference for Cassandra administrators but other NoSQL system administration is valued.
  • Troubleshoot database issues and performance bottlenecks
  • Produce clear documentation for delivered solutions
  • Work with development and quality assurance teams to deliver robust, quality, on-time solutions
  • Programming or scripting language in addition to T-SQL and NoSQL coding (PowerShell, UNIX shell, Python, etc.) is desirable.
  • Deep understanding of cluster management areas. Cassandra cluster skills such as adding or removing nodes, consistency tuning, replication, and multi-DC configuration required.
  • Good understanding of database system monitoring, management and capacity planning.
  • Experience with performance analysis and tuning in SQL Server and distributed NoSQL environment is highly valued.
  • Good knowledge of database backup and recovery, connectivity and security, and role management
  • Ability to express complex technical concepts effectively, both verbally and in writing required.
  • Ability to work well with people from many different disciplines with varying degrees of technical experience.
