Biosecurity New Zealand has a critical role in preventing harmful organisms crossing New Zealand's borders. Along with preparing for and responding to biosecurity incursions, it also manages border and compliance activities, diagnostics and surveillance activities and MPI's centralised intelligence, planning and co-ordination group.

Mō tō mātou rōpū - About the Team

MPI is looking for full time communications centre officers for our Health and Safety monitoring team in Porirua. This exciting role provides safety overwatch for our field teams and effectively a Ministry centric 111 system for our staff.

In staying connected you will be required to use two way radio, land line, satphone and satellite based texting to monitor deployed staff.

All MPI vehicles are also tracked with emergency and collision alarms.

When not directly monitoring field staff you will be responsive to electronic reporting issues from the commercial fishing fleet, where appropriate issuing formal notices allowing vessels to keep fishing.

As part of a team of up to four operators, you will also field calls and questions on our fishing POACHER line, assigning jobs to staff or answering legislative questions.

Successful candidates will undergo five weeks paid training, Monday to Friday, prior to joing the roster. The National Communications Centre will be operating during the hours 5am to midnight, seven days a week from January 2022.

Current hours are 7am to 10pm.

Operators work rotating shifts of generally 10 hours and eight shifts every fortnight.

Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the Role

  • You will support MPI's operational activities by monitoring the safety of MPI staff in the field and providing real-time information to them to inform them as they assist and enforce all relevant legislation and regulations across New Zealand.
  • This position has a secondary role of recording and analysing malfunctions with commercial fishing digital monitoring equipment and making a recommendation for a directive to be issued to either allow fishing to continue or for the affected fishing entity to stop fishing.
  • You will become confident with fishing legislation and be able to accurately answer questions from members of the public on commercial, recreational and customary rules.
  • This position includes supporting wider operations and responses through the delivery of information, reporting on activities and risks on the ground and coordinating support to critical incidents as required.
  • In addition, you will be a strong communicator and effective at building and maintaining strong relationship within the Intelligence, Planning and Coordination (IPC) Directorate, the wider MPI community and external stakeholders.
  • You will have :

  • Contact Centre / Call Centre or relevant customer service experience
  • Ability to work in a busy environment and remain calm under pressure
  • Strong PC skills including ability to type at least 40 words per minute
  • Radio communications experience is highly desirable
  • Communications Centre experience is also highly desirable
