Inspector OPCAT Can you understand and analyse human rights issues Do you have experience visiting or working in aged care environments Are you culturally aware and do you have an understanding of disability issues As an independent Officer of Parliament the Chief Ombudsman works to ensure people are treated fairly primarily in relation to the administrative conduct of public sector agencies As part of his role the Chief Ombudsman monitors and inspects places of detention for cruel and inhuman treatment including in private sector aged care facilities The inspection of private sector aged care facilities is a new role that we are developing over the next three years We have a friendly and collaborative environment where our people enjoy interesting and challenging work and are passionate about what they do The role of Inspector OPCAT is to assist the Chief Ombudsman to monitor and inspect places of detention Youll be a member of a new team focused primarily on inspecting and monitoring the treatment of people in aged care facilities Youll carry out inspections gather evidence and contribute to reports and recommendations Youll be travelling across New Zealand with other staff on a regular basis sometimes for up to a week at a time What we are looking for A relevant tertiary qualification and experience in a legal medical social work cultural or education field An understanding of relevant national and international law standards and best practice An understanding of and ability to recognise and understand key M ori disability and other cultural and human rights concepts Experience in visiting or working in a place of detention such as health and disability units aged care facilities or prison facilities An understanding of current detention facility practice the context in which they operate and the challenges they face Experience in undertaking evidence based research and analysis including conducting interviews and site visits to obtain key information All shortlisted applicants will be required to complete a writing test as part of the selection process The successful appointee must have a legal entitlement to work in New Zealand and may be required to achieve and maintain a NZ government NZSIS security clearance and complete a police check Depending on skills and experience the salary for this position will likely be between 80 000 and 104 000 To apply click on the Apply Now button where you will need to register through our online career centre complete our application form and upload your CV and cover letter For further information about this vacancy please email recruitment ombudsman parliament nz Applications close 5 00 pm Wednesday 18 March 2020
