About the role

  • Kōrero mō te tūranga
  • The role of the Fisheries Science team is to support fisheries policy, strategy, and management by providing scientific advice on the sustainability of fisheries and on assessing and mitigating environmental effects of fishing.

    You will play a key role in providing innovative thinking, contributing to planning and the quality assurance of science within Fisheries New Zealand, and provide expert advice on the interactions between fisheries and the aquatic environment.

    You will be an integral part of our Science team, designing and commissioning research projects, evaluating tenders, monitoring research contracts, and reviewing and updating research documents.

    At Principal Scientist level you may run one or more of our multi-stakeholder Science Working Groups or participate in or lead delegations on international fisheries issues.

    Your key responsibilities include :

  • Providing sound advice across the Science group
  • Chairing or participating in fisheries science working group meetings
  • Providing science advice to the fisheries managers
  • Representing New Zealand in domestic and international science meetings of relevance
  • Leading development of appropriate fisheries research programmes
  • Writing and evaluating tenders for fisheries research projects
  • Managing research projects through to completion
  • Communication of science to a broad range of stakeholders and iwi partners.

    We are looking for a Principal Scientist who is passionate about the marine environment and fish / fisheries to join the Science Team within Fisheries New Zealand.

  • Appropriate tertiary qualifications either Master of Science or Doctor of Philosophy in fisheries or other related marine science areas
  • Broad knowledge and substantial experience in marine science, including interactions between fisheries and the aquatic environment
  • Excellent analytical, written and communication skills
  • Experience leading large programmes of work
  • Experience of iwi interaction or with mātauranga Māori would be advantageous

    The seafood industry is an important component of the primary sector. The Science and Information Directorate is part of Fisheries New Zealand, one of four business units at the Ministry for Primary Industries.

    Science is a key component of Fisheries New Zealand and the science team is responsible for providing scientific advice on the status of our fisheries resources and on assessing and mitigating environmental effects of fishing.

    The science team covers a broad range of relevant marine science including stock assessments, bycatch quantification and mitigation, as well as biodiversity research and effects of fishing on marine populations and communities, with an increasing consideration of ecological links and marine ecosystems.

    We work proactively with managers and a wide range of stakeholders to solve problems and obtain new data and ideas for innovative and improved solutions.

    For this position a Wellington location would be preferred, but the Ministry supports flexible working arrangements and other locations may be considered.

    If suitable candidates are not available for the permanent opportunity this is also open to qualified scientists interested in a secondment, or similar arrangement, for a period of at least one year.
