    Local Government Branch

    The Local Government Branch provides advice to Ministers on key strategic policy issues facing the Local Government sector portfolio, the regulatory and legislative frameworks that govern the Local Government sector, including the Local Government Act 2002 and its amendments, and the Local Electoral Act 2001 and its amendments.

    Enhancing relationships with Iwi-Māori is a cross-cutting kaupapa within the Local Government Branch and a series of place-based initiatives have been piloted and implemented in several rohe (regions) across Aotearoa / New Zealand. Initiatives include :

  • Kaupapa Reorua : bilingual towns and cities
  • Data Portal : providing data to co-governance arrangements so they can effectively manage their resources
  • Streamlining : supporting Councils and Iwi-Māori to work together
  • The Advisor will support the ongoing implementation, successful delivery and the development of an enhancements programme of work.

    We are looking for a candidate that has the following skills and experience :

  • Ability to establish relationships with a range of internal and external stakeholders
  • Work effectively with diversity, people from diverse backgrounds and has current experience working with Iwi-Māori and local government
  • Demonstrated experience supporting the delivery of successful projects including contract management, invoicing, collecting intelligence and feedback from suppliers, contractors and other stakeholders
  • An organised, self-starter who can manage competing priorities including working with partner agencies, gather insights, and contribute to Ministerial briefings and responses
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and can adapt these for a range of audiences
  • Is confident working in a Te Ao Māori context and understands how to apply mātauranga Māori to progress work programmes and initiatives
  • Is comfortable using te reo me ona tikanga Māori
