We have an exciting opportunity for a motivated individual to join our Humanitarian Development team as a Community Activator in Wellington.
As part of the largest humanitarian organisation in the world, New Zealand Red Cross plays a vital role in providing assistance to vulnerable people in New Zealand and overseas.
New Zealand Red Cross is an organisation with more than 14,500 members and 500 staff.
The Community Activator will be a key local team member in supporting and growing New Zealand Red Cross humanitarian impact in the community through local partnerships and empowering members and volunteers.
Utilising a community-led development approach, the Community Activator will facilitate and support communities, members and volunteers to develop or deliver humanitarian action that is aligned with the mission, strategic priorities and fundamental principles of New Zealand Red Cross.
In this role, the key areas you will be contributing to are :
building stronger communities by strengthening community resilience which will enable communities to feel more connected, united and prepared for and to recover from disasters and emergencies
supporting members, volunteers and communities to take leadership in developing local solutions to local needs
empowering the wider community to become humanitarians in their own backyards to support vulnerable people in Aotearoa
inspiring young people to undertake humanitarian action

Empathy and a strong passion for humanitarian causes
Demonstrated people skills : good communication with individuals, groups and people from diverse backgrounds
Demonstrated relationship building skills (internally and externally)
Demonstrated experience of being a self-starter , showing initiative, creating opportunities proactively
Understanding and experience of community-led development, community empowerment, and engaging communities using community development approaches in the humanitarian field
Experience in any combination of the following; volunteer management, education, health promotion, community development, youth development disaster risk management, civil defence, or community engagement
Confidence to work respectfully and effectively within Māori cultural contexts including a familiarity and ability to move within settings involving tikanga Māori
Confidence to work respectfully and effectively within multicultural contexts, and include people of all abilities, gender identities and ages
