Job Description

The Hardware Engineer designs and maintains all of Microchip’s products. The Hardware Engineer is involved in resolving any hardware issues or obsoleting of parts, as well as the design of new or any improvements of the Microchip products.

It is important that the Hardware Engineer works closely with the Senior Hardware Engineer and that all work is peer reviewed.

Also any changes to the hardware of the products is properly tested, meets any relevant specifications and certifications such as CE before it is released to the customers.

It is critical that all changes, tests or reviews in relation to certifications or tests are documented fully. The Hardware Engineer ensures that the products and their practices, systems, documentation designs and any prototypes produced, meet specification or scope and that the projects are managed so they complete on time.

The Hardware Engineer inputs to the final design and development of complex high reliability products integrating the latest technologies and meeting the highest performance standards.

This covers the implementation and commissioning of hardware for Microchip precision GPS based clocks and associated products in accordance with defined project parameters (scope, budget, schedule and quality) and other projects undertaken by Microchip.

The Hardware Engineer inputs to the hardware design once the scope of specification has been received from the Innovation team and ensures that Microchip builds products or new versions that are economic and attractive to customers.

Job Responsibilities

  • Designing and implementing electronic hardware to meet agreed scope and specification and to do this in the given / agreed timeframes.
  • Adherence with hardware development standards and supports the Senior Hardware Engineer in developing these standards.
  • Liaise with Test Engineer and Senior Hardware Engineer in defect or obsoletion risk and impact assessment.
  • Conduct functional circuit verification through simulation or other means to ensure product performance and quality prior to manufacture and also with RMA’s.
  • Complete product acceptance testing and reporting to show that products are meeting the design criteria and complete all documents so this is recorded.
  • Produce detailed designs and documents for all work using required standards, methods and tools, including prototyping tools where appropriate.
  • This should include detail on how the design works including description of less obvious aspects of the design aimed at the Customer Support Engineer level.

  • Identify and implement electronic hardware design solutions to lower the cost of manufacture of all Microchip products and work closely with the Manufacturing Relationship Manager to ensure that benefits are recorded and realized.
  • Provide input into periodic design reviews, including DFT (Design for Testability) and DFM (Design for Manufacturability) for products being developed and / or redesigned so that Microchip can manufacture as economically as possible.
  • Understand certification agency and other regulatory compliance requirements, including UL and CE standards around environmental testing, EMC and product safety.
  • Prepare plans and documentation to ensure that Microchip keeps these certifications up to date and the documentation is ready for customer inspection.

  • Ensure the designs adhere to RoHS standards.
  • Complete the entire design cycle by releasing the design to manufacturing; defining and executing product evaluations;
  • and meeting the schedule, cost, quality, and performance targets for the project

  • Participate in the Innovation process, learn about the business requirements and look for ways to creatively solve the needs of customers and recommend new directions.
  • Remember that Microchip products need to be economic and innovative. Recommend / design structures and tools for systems which meet business needs and takes into account target environment, performance & security requirements and existing systems.

  • Promote the benefits of addressing all security issues during solution development and ensures secure development improvement practices.
  • Evaluate and undertake impact analysis on major design options and assesses and manage associated risks. Ensures that the system design balances functional, service quality, security and systems management requirements.
  • Work with the Innovation team and Development team as a whole on this to ensure all working together.

  • Ensure that all hardware changes undergo proper peer review.
  • Compliance with Engineering Change Management requirements.
  • Draft release notes, as needed and provide a final review on all documentation and test related material.
  • Be actively looking for ways to carry out parts consolidation must complete a full review of the components used across the product range and consolidate similar parts where possible to result in cost savings across the product range.
  • Work with the Customer Support Engineer to provide 2nd Level support on RMA’s or faults that have been reproduced. Ensure they receive regular updates of hardware fixes so the Sales Team keeps customers informed of the progress.
  • Rapid prototyping take a Fail fast approach to design, utilising rapid prototyping techniques to learn and speed up the development process.
  • Ensure the Altium and Rosetta BOMs are kept up to date and in sync with the contract manufacturer BOMs at all times.
  • Submit monthly reports on Project progress to the Senior Development Manager or as and when required.
  • Adhere to all company processes, policies and procedures with regards to health and safety, administration, quality and project management.
  • Perform any other duties as required by Microchip Management.
  • Key Performance Indicators

  • All hardware projects are completed on time and to specification
  • No hardware issues are in the Microchip defect repository are left unattended or unresolved.
  • All certifications and test (CE and others) documentation is up to date with all Hardware changes made and for new or changed products.
  • Customer Support and Sales are kept informed promptly on development projects.
  • Documentation is up to date and completed before a project is handed over or deemed complete. Responsibility for all documentation falls under the Senior Hardware Engineer.
  • All part obsoletion requests from Microchip’s Contract Manufacturer are dealt with promptly and economic assessments of the replacements are undertaken and documented.
