Our Regulation Branch is looking for Analysts and Senior Analysts to join their Energy, Airports and Dairy portfolio which has regulatory responsibilities for electricity lines companies, major international airports, gas pipelines businesses, and dairy, industries that are essential to everyday life and the economy.

We have several opportunities ranging in duration (6-12 month fixed-term, permanent), based in our Wellington office and are open to flexible working arrangements.

The role

As an Analyst or Senior Analyst you will be tasked with developing and applying economic regulation as well as analysing the performance of regulated businesses in New Zealand.

This includes the development of regulatory rules and process, setting of revenue limits, sector reviews, data analysis and reporting.

We are looking for people who can own and drive forward analysis that will underpin our public decisions. Depending on your skills and / or experience, there may also be opportunities to support or lead the project management functions of our work.

Currently we have processes underway for setting revenue limits and quality standards for the owner and operator of the national electricity grid, and 17 regional electricity distributors, as well as ongoing analysis of the performance of all sectors we regulate.

What you will have

You will need to be organised and able to work within regulatory frameworks and project teams. You will be able to clearly articulate the rationale behind your analysis and make practical focussed recommendations that can withstand rigorous scrutiny.

You will also have :

  • the ability to think, write, and communicate clearly
  • a passion for analysing information and developing industry knowledge
  • a degree in an analytical field (e.g. economics, law, finance, engineering)
  • an understanding of economic principles and the ability to interpret legislation
  • experience working within a project management framework - meeting deadlines and making time / quality / cost trade-offs; and
  • excellent relationship management skills.
  • We also have opportunities for those with strong modelling skills with experience using excel and / or Stata. Ideally you will have a background in one of the regulated sectors such as electricity, gas, airports and / or dairy, however this is not essential.
