Job Description

Do you want to feel connected with your colleagues and community? Whangarei District Council takes genuine pride in having one of New Zealand’s most welcoming and supportive work environments, with the awards to prove it.

Our organisation won the 2021 NZ HR Award for Organisational Change & Development, the Taituara Award for Excellence in Organisation and People Development, and we were a 2021 Diversity Awards NZ™ finalist.

We continually strive to provide the best working environment for our people.

Part of this satisfaction comes from knowing we make a difference with the work we do. Our organisation is small enough for independent work to be valued, and big enough to make an impact within our community.

This is an exciting time for the District, with a growing population, a housing boom, and new developments in Whangarei City.

We take our reputation as a lifestyle destination very seriously, and there’s a lot to make you Love it Here!’ The Council is a key player in ensuring the District continues to prosper.

Our General Manager Community is a central role in the organisation setting direction, developing our people and facilitating performance to deliver the best results for the Whangarei District.

As a member of the Strategic Leadership Team, working together to implement the strategies and policies of the Council, this role reports directly to the Chief Executive and is specifically responsible for community development, customer services, libraries, venues and events and civil defence.

Each role in the team has a focus on the future and is tasked with ensuring long and short-term objectives are met.

Exceptional people skills are a must for this role to collaboratively shape and influence our people in meeting our organisational objectives.

In an ever-increasing dynamic environment Council recognises its obligations under Te Tiriti o Waitangi and has forums that acknowledge these obligations.

The strategic leadership portfolios require engagement with all parties, in particular with Māori.

Along with strategic leadership experience and strong interpersonal abilities, you will bring perspective, influence and transformative expertise.

This is an outstanding opportunity for you to join a proactive Council committed to its community. If you want to utilise your strategic leadership skills, can develop practical strategies, demonstrate flexibility and you enjoy variety and challenge, then we would love to hear from you.
