Every person with a disability deserves a life of choice, freedom and independence.
What did you do at work today? Bounce on a trampoline? Organise an earthquake drill, help someone with their CV? Give advice on how to break up with their girlfriend, sing a Wiggles song 8 times, go to Zumba, help someone plan their 21st birthday party?
Did you use your insight to figure out why someone was upset and then help them feel better? Help someone to plan a healthy tasty menu within their budget and teach new them some cooking skills?
Did you help someone make a friend or join a local volunteer group?
Every day, our support workers do all of this and more. Working for our Residential service at Spectrum Care, your role would be to provide support for young men and women with intellectual disabilities.
Just like you, they want the same things in life as most people, but they just might need some extra help to make it happen.
We currently have a variety of rewarding full time, part time, casual and fixed term roles available across Wellington and the Hutt Valley.
You might be interested in working daytime shifts helping young adults find work and study opportunities, or working alongside people in their homes during the day, evening and overnight.
You need to be a quick thinker who can 'tune in' to what is happening around them, to know when to be a calming influence, and when to use positivity to energise things.
You'll need to be good at explaining and teaching, great at making relationships and connecting with people, and you'll need insight to know when to step forward and help, and when to step back and observe.
Some people we support use words to communicate, others communicate in other ways- but if you're an empathic and observant person you can usually work out what they're wanting to say.
