    In 2018, Napier Port managed the arrival and departure of over 680 ships, handled over five million tonnes of cargo and welcomed more than 100,000 cruise passengers.

    Following a further year of significant achievement, including a recent equity listing on the NZX, Napier Port is seeking to appoint its first General Counsel to support the company's ambitious growth strategy for the future.

    Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the General Counsel will establish the internal legal function developing systems and processes to proactively identify and manage risk, and building strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

    You will provide timely, accurate and commercially focused legal advice on a broad range of strategic and day to day matters.

    An important part of the role will involve working closely with the Board and Management team to provide effective company secretarial services to ensure NZX compliance and reporting requirements are met.

    As a valued advisor and business partner you will also provide 'first line' advice on a diverse range of legal issues impacting Napier Port operations, contribute your expertise to strategic projects, keep the business updated on legal and regulatory change and manage relationships with external legal advisors.

    The ideal candidate we seek will possess the following :

  • A tertiary qualification in law and current NZ practising certificate (or eligibility to hold one)
  • A minimum of 10 years' PQE in corporate and commercial law
  • Prior experience advising publicly listed companies and a sound understanding of the relevant legislation
  • Prior experience as a legal advisor in a corporate environment preferred
  • A high level of commercial awareness with a pragmatic, solutions focused approach
  • Proven leadership skills and the ability to develop effective relationships and influence at all levels of the business
  • A proactive, self-motivated and collaborative working style
