We are looking for a Field Soil Surveyor to help us map and investigate New Zealand's valuable soil and land resources.

About the opportunity

This is a practical and skilled role aimed at degree-qualified (or similarly experienced) graduates with a demonstrated interest in soils, soil mapping or land / environment mapping, and who are truly interested in a position that involves a mix of working outdoors, technical skills, research (or research support), data collection and collation, and the opportunity to visit out-of-way farms and locations throughout NZ.

At a more specific level, the position is to provide support for research and commercial contracts focused on the characterization and evaluation of New Zealand soil resources, as well as research projects aimed at enhancing our understanding of how our soils function.

The position will contribute to soils-related research and projects in the Characterising Land Resources and Managing Land and Water portfolios.

This is a full-time, fixed-term position (3 years) reporting to a Capability Leader within the Soils & Landscapes team. The position is based at Hamilton.

About you

You will have a Bachelor's degree in Soil Science OR a relevant degree with some experience in agriculture, conservation, land management, or environmental management.

Ideally, you will have a demonstrated interest in pedology and soil characterisation, with skills in soil mapping, soil profile description, soil classification, and field work procedures.

Supplementary training regarding S-Map soil mapping and sampling will be provided. Familiarity with Geographic Information Systems (GIS), S-map Online, and land evaluation systems would be a definite plus.

An ability to liaise successfully with farmers, Māori landowners, and regional council staff is also desirable. The role requires a high level of physical fitness and a willingness to travel throughout New Zealand.
