Community Support Worker - Aspirations - Wellington
Spectrum Care
Wellington, NZ
3d ago

Spectrum Care Trust supports children and adults who have intellectual disabilities and we are looking for a new team member in Lower Hutt.

This role is based in Naenae.

We need a team member for a small daytime support service for young adults who have high support needs. We're looking for someone kind and empathic to support around 6 young people, some of whom have limited mobility, sight, and hearing.

Their communication is mostly non-verbal, so you will need to be someone who can tune in to their needs, feelings, and wishes - someone who can help them grow, learn, enjoy, and be safe, comfortable and happy during their day.

You will assist during activities, and hopefully bring ideas of your own for things they may enjoy doing and experiencing.

A couple are little, but they sure are busy bees with high energy. We'll need someone who can keep up and engage them in dancing, music, and sensory delights.

Someone who is great at interaction- getting your face in the right place, using your expressions and voice to 'connect'.

Most need support with personal cares : eating, going to the bathroom etc. If that's new to you, don't worry; everyone has to start somewhere.

The main thing is that you are a kind, genuine person, who is insightful and intuitive, and ready to be lively and active or gentle and soothing as needed.

Attributes & Skills

  • Committed to supporting people with disabilities to live great lives
  • Empathic, intuitive, kind, positive and engaging
  • Keen to help young adults grow and develop
  • Able to communicate effectively and attentively with your colleagues and the people you support
  • Ready to "go with the flow" and change activities quickly if necessary
  • Comfortable with reporting and administration tasks
  • Prepared to support people with personal cares such as toileting, bathing and dressing
  • Willing to learn new skills and take the time to get to know program participants as individuals
  • The ideal candidate will have :

  • A relevant qualification or the commitment to achieve a Community Support Worker Level Three qualification
  • Experience supporting children, or adults with disabilities
  • A full New Zealand driver's licence
  • The ability and confidence to drive a van, experience with a manual transmission is a bonus, or willingness to quickly learn this
  • Some experience with computers, including programs such as Word, Internet Explorer, and email
  • Spectrum Care is proudly an equal opportunity employer.
