The 2023 Census is part of Aotearoa’s past, present and future. The Census is a nationwide survey that happens every 5 years to understand more about life in Aotearoa and how it is changing.
Iwi, community groups, local and central government and businesses use census data to make decision about funding and services that affect you, your whānau, and your community.
By taking part in the census, you help create a better understanding of your community and what it needs.

The goal of the Stats NZ 2023 Census is to deliver quality census data for New Zealand through achieving good response rates and quality data from all participants who engage with our Field Census Collectors.
Te āhua o Te Tūranga The nature of the position
As a natural leader of people, your role will be to effectively help train and lead a team of Field Census Collectors who are on the ground in their respective areas.
You will be supporting them with any issues, ensuring each individual is on track and providing guidance to help to increase census participation rates from the dwellings they are visiting and ensuring that the data collected is of a high quality.
You will be confident that your team are well equipped and safe, and by using their local knowledge, you’ll be improving response rates and identifying potential risks and barriers to respondents have to participate.
By getting the face to face, grass roots interactions right in your local community, you will be setting the foundations of respondents being comfortable in their census response, understanding the value of the information they are providing, and just how their data is used.
Supporting your local community to understand this linkage is pivotal. This importance is amplified when it comes to Māori who have evidenced lower participation rates of response, and as a result do not fully feature when it comes to accurate statistical representation and funding for the likes of Health, Education and Housing.
We are absolutely committed to changing this and are focused on encouraging Māori and priority groups to participate in the 2023 Census.
What success looks like for a Team Leader takes many forms; uplift in response rates from the local community, a team who are engaged and motivated, and the end outcome of increased responsiveness and engagement from respondents.
Being out in the field with your team providing support, coaching and upskilling, you will be ensuring the quality of work is achieved, time deadlines are met, and the quality assurance activities are taking place.
Enabling your Field Test Census Collectors to accurately follow processes, have the right, culturally appropriate conversations with everyone they engage with, you will be applying the knowledge you have of your local area and supporting your team in building high trust connections with respondents.

You do not require a corporate or mainstream background to become a great Team Leader. In fact, we’d really like to hear from you if you have great life skills, you are a leader in your local community, iwi, hapū, marae, coach / leader of your local sports team or any other background where you can fit the person specification and role requirements.
