We are looking for an IT Engineer - Database to help design, build, maintain, and troubleshoot Database Infrastructure for Spark internal systems and clients.

You will be part of a talented team of engineers that demonstrate superb technical competency, delivering mission critical infrastructure and ensuring the highest levels of availability, performance and security


  • Carrying out work for Physical Infrastructure to support different Spark Business Units
  • Implementing tactical and transformational initiatives that will significantly improve our current operations capability
  • Measuring end user experience and continually improving this through automation, standardisation, simplification and consolidation
  • Supporting the following Service Catalogue building blocks : Build / Integration, Systems Management, Technical Support, Operations, Information Security Management, Database Management and Data Management
  • Managing an allocated set of Technology Components on a day-to-day basis in accordance with Spark's standards and processes
  • Working with other Operations teams to ensure SLAs are achieved
  • Improve and where practical automate operational activities to deliver ongoing gains in service delivery performance and cost effectiveness
  • Escalate issues to appropriate senior team members or management within defined timeframes
  • Demonstrate and instill the Spark Team values
  • Carry out other duties and special projects as required from time to time

  • Resolving operational incidents, service tasks and problems on a day-to-day basis in accordance with Spark and customer standards and ITIL processes.
  • Identify, improve, automate, established operational activities, to deliver improved service delivery, system performance, cost saving and efficiency
  • As part of a team rotation, actively doing on-call and working overtime as required
  • Working independently of the team when required as part of a project team
  • Writing and presenting changes in a Technical Change advisory meeting when needed
  • Responsible for managing and monitoring all installed database systems
  • Install, configure, test and maintain database systems
  • Proactively ensure the highest levels of systems and infrastructure availability
  • Monitor and test database performance for potential bottlenecks, identify possible solutions, and work with developers to implement those fixes
  • Maintain security, backup, and redundancy strategies
  • Write and maintain custom scripts to increase system efficiency and lower the human intervention time on any tasks
  • Participate in the design of information and operational support systems
  • Provide 2nd and 3rd level support
  • Liaise with vendors and other IT personnel for problem resolution
  • Mentor Service Desk and other teams
  • Actively use, improve and update operational knowledge base
  • Identify process improvement opportunities to Chapter Lead

  • 3+ years' experience supporting Database Systems covering any 2 of the following : Oracle RACOracle ExadataIBM DB2PostgresqlMongoDBMysqlCassandra
  • Working knowledge and experience on Database Cluster Technologies mainly Oracle RAC
  • Good working knowledge of Oracle Exadata appliance
  • Experience on patching Oracle database and Exadata Appliance
  • Ability to manage Oracle Enterprise Manager and target agents
  • Experience with a scripting languages like bash or python
  • Proven database performance tuning and security hardening skills
  • Experience creating operations process documentation
  • Proven outstanding analytical ability and problem solving skills
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Understanding of Agile and Scrum methodologies
  • Understanding of service delivery and ITIL
  • Understanding of technology evolution and industry trends
  • Effective Communication - proven presentation and communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Accept that your task and priority will change rapidly on the requirement of the business
  • Must be Oracle Exadata Certified Specialist together with certification in any of the above DB technologies
  • You must be legally entitled to work in New Zealand
  • Have no prior convictions that could jeopardise obtaining the necessary security clearances
