The team

The Maritime Deployed Team monitors, manages and improves technology solutions that are compatible with the core defence infrastructure, compute platforms and applications while being tailored for the unique challenges of the maritime environment.

The team provides a common user experience across all security domains for all of the RNZN’s fleet and maritime domain expertise within CIS Branch, ensuring that the challenges of providing connectivity at sea are factored into product decision making across the branch.

The role

As a Solution Designer, you will be responsible for the technical detailed design for Maritime Deployed, and maintaining your understanding of the current state to inform future design cycles and enable continuous improvement, as articulated by blueprints and roadmaps.

You will provide design oversight to implementation teams, and understand user and functional requirements to design new solutions that meet customer needs.

You will also appreciate and be able to articulate the non-technology aspects of proposed solutions in order to provide the complete picture to decision makers.

You will work closely with the Domain Architect, Product Designer and members of your own team, and other teams, to deliver solutions that comply with the Domain Architecture and High Level Design (HLD) of the applicable product(s).

These solutions will be ready for execution through development / prototyping. As your solutions will be implemented onto RNZN ships, you will also design collaboratively with RNZN personnel and their industry partner Babcock.

Technical skills

  • Strong Infrastructure Architect background, particularly with VMWare, with hands-on experience;
  • Experience developing and iterating robust high level and detail designs to meet evolving system requirements;
  • Knowledge of basic network design with an awareness of automation (XML, JSON, Ansible) and infrastructure as code.
  • Knowledge of or exposure to a combination of the following technical skills would be an advantage but is not essential :

  • Dell EMC VxRail Hyper converged Infrastructure;
  • Server Monitoring and Management Tools;
  • WAN Optimisation or similar;
  • Inline Network Encryptors (INEs);
  • Security Infrastructure including firewalls, VPNs, etc;
  • Management of and adaptation to maritime vessel physical and environmental constraints such as shock, vibration, EMC / EMI, Size, Weight, Power and Cooling;
  • Interoperability standards in the domestic and international defence context;
  • Commercial and military communication bearers;
  • Azure Platform & Stack;
  • RNZN Engineering Change Proposal (ECP) process.
  • Additional skills

  • Strong written and oral communication skills, an attention to detail and comfortable working with cross-functional teams;
  • Continuous improvement ethos with the ability to trade-off solution decisions with the necessary support arrangements;
  • Previous experience working in classified or commercially sensitive environments (desirable).
  • Qualifications and certifications

  • Relevant Microsoft certification (e.g. MCP / MCSA);
  • Technical qualifications appropriate to the domain, e.g. BE or BSc or equivalent experience in an applicable engineering or ICT discipline;
  • Cisco switching & routing certification desirable;
  • Relevant WAN optimisation certification desirable;
  • Firewall certification desirable.
