Role Type : Permanent and full time

Location : Wellington City

Salary Band : $200,000 to $220,000 per annum depending on skills and experience of the successful applicant

Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the Role ,

Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the Financial Controller is responsible for providing leadership and engagement with the business to ensure that MPI optimises its short-term and long-term financial and business performance, whilst ensuring that MPI is a financially well-run business.

Key responsibilities will be :

  • Leading the development, maintenance, and operation of MPI's Internal Control Framework and Fraud Awareness & Prevention
  • Manage the strategy, planning, and implementation of MPI's finance system and process improvements
  • Lead MPI's tax policy and compliance functions
  • Lead MPI's insurance procurement and processes alongside other key stakeholders
  • Lead the development and delivery of MPI's year-end financial statements, manage the audit review process with the Ministry's auditors and lead the development of MPI's annual financial statements
  • Lead and manage the delivery of financial operations and accounting support and provide advice, analysis, reporting, risk management, and effective financial governance for MPI and its business areas
  • Lead the relationship with the Treasury on technical aspects of treasury and cash management
  • Lead the planning, delivery and quality assurance reviews of regular Treasury financial reporting and technical updates
  • Lead training, education and awareness of financial management and compliance with policies with the business.

    To be successful in the role you will have a previous track record of achieving results, effectively planning, and introducing change in an organisation, building positive stakeholder relationships, and possess the ability to maintain a clear focus on long-term organisational and financial goals.

    You will also be highly analytical, with a strong attention to detail and be able to negotiate skilfully in tough situations.

    You will need the following skills and experience to be successful :

  • Chartered accountant qualification (CAANZ or equivalent) with over 10 years relevant experience
  • Significant experience in leading the delivery of proactive business and financial advice in a public sector and / or commercial environment
  • Proven experience in the interpretation and application of NZ accounting standards and external statutory reporting
  • Experience in financial management systems strategy, support, enhancement, and the delivery of systems and process change
  • Experienced in service design and process optimisation and control

  • most preferably a NZ citizen, who has resided continuously in NZ for at least the last five (5) years , OR
  • is a citizen of, and / or has resided continuously in one or more of the following countries for the last five (5) years : either Australia, Canada, NZ, the United Kingdom (UK) or the United States of America (USA);
  • and has a background history that is verifiable and can be assessed as appropriate by the NZ Security Intelligence Service (NZSIS) towards a recommendation of suitability for a security clearance at this level.
