It may be winter now but in the spirit of looking forward to another wonderful New Zealand Summer we are starting our hunt for an amazing Outdoor Instructor to join us at Shakespear Lodge for the 2019 / 2020 summer season.

This is fixed term / seasonal role starting in September / October 2019 until May 2020.

We are looking for an outgoing, motivated, and committed person to join the instructional team at their YMCA Shakespear Lodge.

YMCA Outdoors delivers camp experiences for school and community groups, providing a wide range of activities such as sailing, rock climbing, kayaking, mountain biking, camp cooking and orienteering-

About the role

You will ideally bring with you experience from similar previous roles in the outdoors. You must be super passionate about everything outdoors, enjoy working with children and be excited to learn new things! You also need to be confident and comfortable taking in front of and to groups of people / children.

We welcome applications from all over the world, but you do need to have a valid working visa to be able to join us!

Based on the stunning Whangaparaoa Peninsula Shakespear Lodge is located approx. 50 minutes’ drive from Auckland CBD.

Hours

During the term time camps, your day will start at 8.20am and end between 4pm & 5.30pm. With the majority of shifts being Mon-

Fri + occasional weekend work.

In the school holidays work times will vary as we cover a 24 / 7 roster- including weekends, day shifts & sleepover support.

Part-time 16-40 hours per week

Fixed term basis between September / October 2019- May 2020

In this role you will

  • Instruct outdoor educational programmes to groups largely aged 8-14 this includes setting up & packing down equipment, giving instructions & encouraging participation.
  • You need to be able to think on your feet, be creative & have strong communication skills.

  • Work as part of a team but also on your own, we have a great team culture at Camp!
  • Help with cleaning & maintenance of activity equipment
  • Be responsible for health & safety of campers
  • School Holiday Camp programmes- including activity instruction, free time, meal times & sleepover support
  • Assist with camp tasks including cleaning, maintenance and catering
  • Assist with Pest Free Park
  • This role is ideal for someone who is passionate about the outdoors & teaching and this would reflect in your previous work or study experience & hobbies.

    Site-specific training will be provided.

    We offer a wide range of activities including sailing, team building games, mountain boarding & biking, rock climbing, kayaking, radios, camp cooking and more!

    Shakespear Lodge is not accessible by public transport routes & does not offer permanent accommodation for Instructors, applicants must have their own reliable transport

    Short term overnight accommodation only while working on school holiday camps.

    Skills & Experience

    To be a great outdoor instructor you need to be passionate about the outdoors, outgoing and excited to share your love of the outdoors with others!

    While previous experience is not essential only candidates with a strong passion for the outdoors & teaching will be considered for this role.

    This could be demonstrated through your previous jobs, hobbies or study.

    With our beachfront location, it would be ideal if you have plenty of sailing experience & experience leading any water based activities will be an advantage.

    You will also need to be a strong & confident swimmer with good knowledge of water safety!

    We are looking for an energetic team player who works well as part of a team but can also do an awesome job on their own! You need to be confident talking to groups and be a quick learner with the ability to teach others.

  • A strong interest / passion for the outdoors & outdoor activities
  • A passion or interest in teaching & working with children
  • Physically active & able to be on your feet all day & exposed to the outdoor elements (if you don’t like getting wet or muddy this isn’t for you!)
  • Flexibility to work shifts including some weekends and overnights
  • Hardworking & reliable with your own transport
  • Any relevant certificates, qualifications & technical skills would be advantageous e.g. Outdoor First Aid, Skills Active Quals, NZOIA

    Experience working with Camps especially YMCA Camps anywhere in the world would also be advantageous

    Safeguarding

    Staff will be required to attend Safeguarding workshops, trainings and online modules to comply with YMCA North Safeguarding Policies

    The successful applicant will need to return a satisfactory Police Record Check before commencement of Employment.

    Visas

    Applicants must be eligible to work in New Zealand during the months specified, if you are considering applying from overseas please advise in your cover letter which visa you will hold (please note this will not suit those on a student visa as you will be required to be able to work over 20hrs per week at times)
