The Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu nomination and appointment process is being undertaken to appoint a new Ngāi Tahu representative to the Kaikōura Marine Guardians.

Purpose of the Kaikōura Marine Guardians

  • To recognise the local, national and international importance of the coast and sea around Kaikōura (Te Tai o Marokura) as a consequence of its unique coastal and marine environment and distinctive biological diversity and cultural heritage.
  • Provide measures to assist the preservation, protection, and sustainable and integrated management of the coastal and marine environment and biological diversity of Te Tai o Marokura.
  • Acknowledge the importance of kaitiakitanga and local leadership.
  • Provide advice regarding biosecurity, conservation and fisheries matters within a marine management area.
  • Purpose of the role

    The purpose of this role is to represent the Ngāi Tahu perspective to the Kaikōura Marine Guardians ensuring that any issues of tribal significance are reported to Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu while also ensuring that tribal matters of significance are represented to the Guardians.

    Required skills, experience and qualifications

    The Kaikōura Marine Guardians as a group must have a balanced mix of knowledge and experience in relation to the Kaikōura Marine Area.

    He / she will be expected to have the following skills :

  • Knowledge, experience and expertise in one or more aspects relevant to the management of the Kaikōura Marine Area (KMA).
  • The ability to work with other members of the Guardians and with agency officials to establish common goals and work cooperatively to achieve them.
  • The ability to network and consult effectively with stakeholders and community groups.
  • An understanding of or interest in developing an understanding of elements of environmental law relevant to the management of the KMA.

    Meeting details

    No specified number of meetings per annum.

    Remuneration of $500 per full day.
