    Our Youth Justice Residences provide a safe, secure and supportive environment where rangatahi in our care can make changes to get their lives back on track.

    Whakatakapokai is one of five Youth Justice Residences operating across Aotearoa that operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week providing residential placements and programmes for rangatahi aged 13 to 19 years who have been charged with or convicted of an offence.

  • Our vision at Whakatakapokai is to create a unique, culturally focused, therapeutic, safe and restorative care environment that enables rangatahi to strengthen their connection with whānau, hapū, iwi and their culture;
  • and develop the skills to make positive decisions to support them to flourish and transform their lives, reducing the risk of reoffending.

    Whakatakapokai is strongly focused on achieving positive change in rangatahi through education, skill development, vocational programmes, and therapeutic and cultural interventions using a Māori world centric view (Te Ao Māori).

    Our overall goal is that rangatahi who come into our care are positively integrated back into their community and reduce the risk of re offending with their mana restored.

    About the role - Mō te tūnga

    As part of the Therapeutic Specialist Support team, the Quality Lead role is responsible for delivering strategic and operational performance by ensuring that the Residence is meeting the expectations set by our internal and external regulators and ensures compliance of practice for rangatahi and their whānau are of a high standard.

    The role involves leading and maintaining effective quality assurance and improvement mechanisms to ensure practice is monitored and evaluated.

    The Quality Lead will provide expert leadership on quality assurance and improvement methodology.

    The role will involve the following :

  • Developing and ensuring constant compliance with legal and regulatory requirements and / or prescribed policies and procedures
  • Facilitating and monitoring adherence to, and consistency with the Residences service model, Care standards, residential regulations and legislative requirements including Section 7AA
  • Leading and maintaining the effective quality assurance and improvement mechanisms to ensure practice is monitored and evaluated for quality and consistency across the Ministry
  • Ensuring a strong focus on outcomes for all rangatahi, in the work of the quality and safety

    To apply for this role, you must demonstrate the following qualifications and experience :

  • Ideally a minimum of five years experience in coordinating and reporting on a range of risks and safety matters
  • Experience of working effectively within a team and as part of a cross-functional team
  • Experience in developing and tracking programmes of work
  • An in-depth knowledge of relevant legislation including but not limited to the Oranga Tamariki Act 1989 is essential
  • Proven ability to effectively initiate, implement and monitor risk and compliance policies and procedures
  • Ability to build and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, both written and verbal with the ability to communicate complex ideas to a range of audiences
  • Knowledge and understanding of support mechanisms, such as kaiatawhai, whānau, kaumatua, Māori practitioners and other Māori providers
